Facebook launching to compete adsense

In Technology, facebook on October 31, 2007 at 7:29 am

ITs quite a strong rumour that Facebook is launching an ad network that will reach far beyond its website, much like Google’s AdSense. Now others are confirming it. AdAge reveals that several advertisers and agencies have been invited to a “discussion” being held Nov. 6 (presumably in time for Ad:Tech NY) where Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will “unveil a new way of advertising online. Feels like adsense  would be having tough time.

Unlocking iphone is now easy

In iphone on October 31, 2007 at 5:47 am

Its easy to unlock Iphone with a website (jailbreakme.com) whre you can instantly install an application that then allows you to install and enjoy 3rd party applications.

If you’re running the latest firmware version on the iPhone or iPod Touch, Jailbreaking it couldn’t be easier. Here’s how:

1. Launch Safari on your iPhone and go to jailbreakme.com
2. Follow the instructions on the page and click on Install AppSnapp

According to the site, once you click to install, you should wait until the “Slide to Unlock” screen appears, which could take up to 5 minutes depending on the speed of your connection.

Once you slide you’ll see an Installer icon. Press that icon and start enjoying 3rd party applications.

The hackers even did you a favor and patched the very exploit (TIFF) that allowed them to gain access and jailbreak your iPhone to begin with.

AdBrite to serve ads for facebook

In facebook on October 30, 2007 at 12:08 pm

Internet advertising marketplace AdBrite has announced a new ad program, tailored to the needs of Facebook application developers, who can now use a new web-based interface to join AdBrite’s ad inventory.

AdBrite co-founder Philip Kaplan claims that the demand from the Facebook application developers was already there, and that it was a logical move for the company. Popular Facebook applications like iLike, Zombies and Pirates already display AdBrite ads.

While the rights to display ads on Facebook itself are held by Microsoft, Facebook third party apps are there for the taking. the Facebook platform has been a huge success, and Facebook applications are already cashing in serious money for developers around the world, so AdBrite has done well to jump on the bandwagon before the competition does.

Google is not coming out with a Googlephone

In Google phone, google on October 30, 2007 at 9:52 am

What part of 'No Googlephone' didn't you understand?

According to valleymag Google is not coming out with a Googlephone. But the idea is clearly so entrancing that tech reporters keep returning to it, as in a new Wall Street Journal article. The short version: Google will announce plans that, instead of involving its own models of cell phones, will work with existing carriers and handset makers. It’s a big comedown for Google’s wireless engineers, who have, it seems, wasted as much as $100 million Google cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin staked on the failed Googlephone project. But as a piece of corporate jujitsu, the Googlephone may still pay off brilliantly. The mere threat of a Googlephone may have been enough to corral some wireless carriers into its camp. And the most intriguing element? Google’s wireless software efforts will pull in existing mobile versions of Gmail and YouTube, among other Google services. But that’s not the key part, as my colleague Gizmodo editor Brian Lam has speculated. No, instead, Google’s hoping to establish a software platform that’s open to third-party developers. And that may be the trickiest part to sell. Wireless carriers are famous for restricting what software can run over their networks. That they would crown Google as the new kingmaker seems unlikely. About as unlikely, in fact, as a Googlephone

Nokia and Samsung makes 54% of the mobile phone market

In News on October 29, 2007 at 8:14 am

Global mobile phone shipments grew a modest 12 percent year-over-year, to reach 285 million units in Q3 2007. Samsung and Nokia were the star performers while Motorola stayed on its down curve. “Total global cell phone shipments remain relatively sluggish, at just 12 percent annual growth, but Samsung and Nokia continue to surge ahead. Samsung is the fastest-growing top-five brand, with 47 percent annual shipment growth. Meanwhile, Nokia has easily the highest operating margin among all megavendors, with a 22 percent rate in its handset division,” commented Neil Mawston, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics.“The rise of Samsung and Nokia is coming partly at the expense of Sony Ericsson and Motorola. Samsung is rapidly picking up share in 3G feature phones, where Sony Ericsson has seen much recent success, while Nokia continues to outsell Motorola in the entry-tier GSM segment of emerging markets,” said Bonny Joy, Analyst at Strategy Analytics.

Holiday season to attract highest sales in 2007

In Gossips, Nikon on October 29, 2007 at 7:53 am

Many analyst believes that highest this holiday season would attarct highests sales in comparison to last 2 years as companies have started focussing on this part of years as most highly selling index.

The holiday shopping season is almost upon us. Many online retailers are still trying to get everything ready for the anticipated hordes of shoppers who will be beating down their online gates to buy gifts for their loved ones and friends.

Most retail sectors depend heavily — and some, almost exclusively — on December sales  to make their yearly numbers. In fact, many online retailers will do more business  in the last 12 days before Christmas than the rest of the year combined.

Online shopping has become a part of the holidays themselves, with 24 percent more unique visitors to

the Index on Thanksgiving and 29 percent more on Christmas day than last year. Many people are taking

advantage of their holiday time off to go online and shop while brick and mortar stores are closed, which

means online shopping may soon take its place among the American holiday traditions of eating and

spending time with friends and family.

Biggest Holiday Online Shopping Day

The biggest online shopping day of the holiday season was December 12th with 30.4 million unique

visitors to the eShopping Holiday Index. On that day, eBay led the top shopping destinations with a

unique audience of 12.4 million, followed by Amazon with 6.1 million unique visitors, and Wal-mart.com

with 4.0 million (see Table 1).

As managing director, Paul Yates, comments, complacency can be the biggest enemy of any on-line business. He explains: “While Christmas may only just be over, effective SEO involves a lot of research, careful implementation and patience. It can take a long time for search engines to spider and index a site, so many well run businesses are already optimising their sites ready for next Christmas.”

Rrestaurant servers stealing their way to higher tips on credit card receipts

In News on October 25, 2007 at 11:16 am

According tu Punny There’s a fascinating yet frightening discussion over at the FatWallet Finance Forums about restaurant servers stealing their way to higher tips on credit card receipts. Servers upset by low tips that they probably deserved have been known to edit the tip line of credit card receipts to bump up their tip. For example:

changing a dollar tip to an 8 dollar tip is easy for crooked waiters

See how easily a measly tip is changed to a generous one by a disgruntled server or bartender?

The easiest way to combat this illegal and downright nasty behavior is to reconcile your receipts against your credit card statements each and every month. You’ll spot restaurant wrongdoing and be able to phone it in to your credit card issuer faster than you can say “there’s a fly in my soup.”

But for the trillions of people who don’t want to go through the trouble of reconciling their receipts each month, there’s an easier way to stop tip alterations just by glancing over your credit card statement each month. It involves using checksums to add a layer of security to your tip amount. The term “checksum” normally refers to a technique used by computer systems to ensure file integrity. Here, we’ll be using checksums to ensure human integrity.

There are many checksum systems you can use when tipping, but here’s a great example that’s easy to learn and can be performed without the aid of a calculator unless you suck at math really badly.

Step 1: Look over your receipt

You’ll get ripped off far more often for food and drink overcharges than you will by spiteful servers. Check each billed item and compare it to the menu price.

Step 2: Calculate the appropriate tip

Tip as you normally do without worrying about checksums for now. For our example, let’s say you had the following bill but service was slow, so you’d like to tip about 10%.

subtotal 47.16 plus tip 4.71 total 51.87

Step 3: Apply a checksum

That $4.71 is just begging to have ten dollars added to it, and $51.87 becomes $61.87 so easily. Foil these alteration efforts with this simple checksum method.

Adjust the amount of the tip so that the numbers in the final total to the left of the decimal point add up to the right-most digit. In this case, the total has a “51″ to the left of the decimal point (A). 5 + 1 = 6, so the final digit should be six. Adjust the total to $51.86 or $51.96 (B) by adding nine or subtracting one from the tip (C).

5 plus 1 equals 6, change the total to 51.86, change the tip to 4.70 to match

Step 4: Check your credit card statements each month

While the receipt will help you ensure no fraud was enacted upon your dining bill, you only need the statement to verify the checksum. For this example, simply locate the dining transaction, add the numbers to the left of the decimal point, and confirm that they add up to the right-most digit. If they don’t, you’ve been scammed.

credit card statement showing thieving server has struck your bill

This technique is not foolproof. If the scammy server had added nine dollars to the total—making it $60.86—the checksum calculation would still come back okay. But because it’s harder to turn a “51″ into a “60″ than a “61,” it’s unlikely your server will do this unless they’re wise to this particular checksum technique.

Step 5: Deal with the theft

If you hit a checksum that fails, dig out your copy of the receipt to confirm it doesn’t match the total on your statement. Next, do three things:

  1. Call your credit card issuer. It should be fairly simple to get a credit for the difference between your actual bill and what you were forced to pay due to this fraud.
  2. Call the police. You were the victim of a crime, so you should report it, even if it’s just a few dollars. If the stealing server has multiple victims who report his or her behavior, the police will likely take action against the server and/or the restaurant. Hopefully a few thieving restaurant workers behind bars will set enough of an example to discourage similar actions in others.
  3. Call the restaurant (optional). At this point, you’ve likely got your money back and given all the information you can to law enforcement. You can try calling the restaurant to report the theft, but it might not do much. In the best case, the manager will recognize the server’s name on your receipt and confirm he or she has been suspected of wrongdoing. Maybe you’ll even get a free meal out of it for your trouble. Worst case, the restaurant does nothing.

The original poster in the FatWallet Finance Forum topic may be onto something when he or she says that this is probably one of the most widespread types of theft that goes unpunished. Now you have the tools to fight it. The next time you’re at a restaurant, eat, drink, be merry, and do a little extra math come tip time to help combat this rapidly growing problem.

Nokia Still Leads Worldwide Cell Phone Market

In News on October 25, 2007 at 11:13 am

cell3.JPGAccording to iSuppli, Nokia is still outselling its competitors in the mobile-phone handset market by more than two to one, and the company’s market share increased from the second quarter.

The analyst firm said that Samsung remains Nokia’s closest competitor. Nokia, however, controls 39.5 percent share of the market, while Samsung shipped only 15.1 percent of those phones sold during the third quarter. Motorola, Sony, and LG rounded out the top five, although iSuppli cautioned that Motorola’s market share estimate should be considered preliminary until Motorola reports its earnings later on Thursday morning.

As usual, the only market Nokia has had difficulty in is North America. iSuppli analyst Tina Teng said in an email that the third-quarter sales figures for the North American market were not available yet. Through the end of 2006, Nokia had roughly 15 percent of the North American market, placing it fourth behind Motorola, with a market share of 40 percent. LG and Samsung almost tied for second and third, respectively, she said.

Tired of Facebook? Try Hatebook

In Entertainment on October 25, 2007 at 10:17 am

Here is your time to say and say hello to Hatebook. Hatebook is a Facebook parody site that looks and functions exactly like Facebook… except with an evil twist. Here’s a brief list of the “evil twist” to give you a better idea of how Hatebook compares to Facebook:

  • if you want to mail message someone on Hatebook, it’s called “junkmail”
  • instead of a blue color scheme, Hatebook is an evil red
  • profiles (called “hate profiles”) include a section called “Why I’m Better Than You!”
  • “Hate Albums” consist of photos and descriptions of things you hate
  • Are you married? Single? Hatebook doesn’t care. Your status options consist of Hater, Player, Sucker, Loser, etc.

After we created a profile, we were greeted with the following message:

“Hello Sucker methodshop! Welcome to Hatebook! Your registration to the Evil Empire was successful. Feel free to pimp your hate profile.”

Also, you are suppose to enter in the wrong mailing address to hide from your enemies. I just used our P.O. Box. I don’t really mind if someone hates that. I don’t really like it myself.

But why just parody Facebook when you can improve it? The German creators of Hatebook have not only recreated Facebook’s functionality, they have also improved it. For example, they’ve integrated Google Maps into Hatebook (Evil Maps) so you can locate people you hate on a map.

Does everybody love to hate? Even advertisers? Time will tell. In the meantime feel free to hate MethodShop.com here: http://hatebook.org/user/methodshop

New Japan carrier enter wireless market

In Technology on October 25, 2007 at 5:56 am

Today sees a new carrier enter Japan’s gorillapolistic cellphone market; eMobile, the cellular subsidiary of ADSL infrastructure company eAccess, is sliding in with a data-only HSDPA service that’ll start this March and grow a voice element in 2008.For the moment, they’re offering one standalone Windows Mobile 5 gadget, the Sharp EM ONE, which looks to be a remix of the WinMob units Sharp’s provided to Willcom thus far; it sports Bluetooth 1.2, 802.11b/g, OneSeg digital TV support, a 4.1-inch wide-VGA screen, and a “dual-slider” keyboard that can expose either the full QWERTY goods HTC-style or simply a directional/enter key, as desired. It will support voice calls once the network does, and it looks like Skype can fill in some of the gap for the meantime. (The remainder of the current range are CF/Express Card/USB devices for laptop use.)

Service costs run about Y5,980 per month before discounts, with the initial cost for an EM ONE determined by whether you opt to remain unfettered by contractual obligations (Y95,000), or go for a one-year contract (Y71,000) or two years (Y39,800).

Voice services will be supported in their initial phases by a roaming arrangement with NTT DoCoMo to provide nationwide coverage; it’s not entirely clear at present how extensive eMobile’s own network is.

Advertisers Look To Big Web Brands In Mobile

In Gossips, News on October 22, 2007 at 12:29 pm

Moconews reports that While mobile advertising is growing strongly, apparently most advertisers are sticking with the familiar names they know from the web rather than the new start-ups targeting mobile. “Advertisers are buying up space on TWC, ESPN and other high-profile wireless Web sites, but lesser-known sites are still awash in excess inventory–even if those sites are wildly popular among young mobile users. AirG, for instance, recently surpassed the 20 million-customer mark, delivering its social networking offering in 10 languages and across more than 100 mobile operators. But despite the attractive demographics of its user base, the Vancouver, British Columbia-based startup is struggling to sell more than 10 percent of its ad space…“The last year’s been good,” said AirG spokeswoman Allison Johnson. “We’re definitely getting a lot more interest, but we’re still not selling anywhere near all of our inventory” reports RCR News. The general attitude seems to be that as the industry matures advertisers will be able to determine which mobile sites are the best for them to advertise with, and mobile marketing startups are keen to be there to close the gap. That being said, even AOL (NYSE: TWX) Mobile is reportedly having trouble, with the majority of the inventory left unsold.

As RCR notes, the potential size of the mobile advertising market varies widely depending on who you talk to. However, I’m calling out the line “AdMob said last week it delivered 673 billion–yes, with a ‘B’–ad impressions to U.S. mobile users in September alone.” I’m not exactly sure what they’re referencing, but this PDF of Admob Network Metrics puts the figure at 673 million, with an ‘m’. I’m going with the smaller figure, since 673 billion would roughly require every single person in the US to view an average of 75 mobile ads every day.

Google still high in Q3 profit

In Gadget, News on October 19, 2007 at 7:28 am

The Google train keeps on rolling. After seeing its stock rise above $600 per share not even two weeks ago, Google has exceeded forecasts by earning a profit of $1.07 billion in the third quarter of 2007, a 46% increase over the $733.3 million it earned during the same period in 2006. Sales have risen 57% to $4.23 billion.

The company is attributing the overall rise to the increasing profitability of search advertisements. Google’s stock has settled to about $639 since the announcement.

Google’s rival Yahoo, while recently reporting a 12% increase in revenue, hasn’t fared as well in terms of profit, which fell for them by 5% to $151.3 million in Q3.

Verizon Wireless in a boiling pot

In Gossips on October 17, 2007 at 11:43 am

Verizon Wireless found itself in a boiling pot of water after the company decided it would not allow a pro-choice abortion group named NARAL to use its mobile network to distribute opt-in SMS news alerts to its subscribers. Verizon Wireless said that company policy prohibits “highly controversial” and potentially “unsavory” messages from being distributed on its network, which is why they turned down the political organization.

This morning, the company reversed its decision in the face of outcry from pro-choice supporters and anti-censorship complaints from all corners of the country.

While Verizon Wireless does not monitor the contents of every SMS message sent on their network, the abortion rights group had hoped to establish a “short code” service (e.g., “text 55555″), which would need to be supported by each mobile operator to be effective on all networks. While their request was approved by other carriers, Verizon Wireless initially said “no.”

NARAL launched a response on their site, asking supporters to contact Verizon’s top executive to complain about “corporate censorship.” The site asks, “What kind of company would deny its customers the ability to use their cell phones to participate in our democracy?”

Verizon wants to share costumer call records data with third parties

In News on October 12, 2007 at 10:06 am

Verizon  Wireless has publicly expressed its intentions to start serving ads to its users, and now it has started: Jason Devitt, the founder of still-stealth Skydeck (founder of Vindigo) writes on his blog that he got a notice from VZW about CPNI (CPNI stands for Customer Proprietary Network Information…a user’s complete call records…an overview of CPNI is here), where Verizon wants to share these records with third parties.

CPNI stands for Customer Proprietary Network Information:so now  our call records, essentially. What numbers we called, how often, how long we spent on the phone, and how much it cost us. (It does not include our own names, numbers, or addresses.)

Verizon wants to share this data with third parties, and of course they need our permission: “you have a right, and we have a duty, under federal and state law, to protect the confidentiality of your CPNI.”

But that duty only goes so far: “Unless you provide us [Verizon Wireless] with notice that you wish to opt out within 30 days of receiving this letter, we will assume that you give the Verizon Companies the right to share your CPNI with the authorized companies as described above.”

Google making Phone software & Mozilla on open-source Firefox browser

In google on October 12, 2007 at 6:47 am

according to Miguel Helft people claims to have seen  the GPhone, complete with descriptions of what it looks like. Not all claims coincide. Regardless, that’s not bad for an effort about which Google has said nothing. Also to be noted is that Mike Schroepfer, the vice president for engineering of the Mozilla Foundation, announced that the group is working on a mobile version of its open-source Firefox browser.

Google’s entry into the phone business is big news. But the sources I talked to with knowledge of the project say Google is not building a phone. The company is building a mobile phone operating system, as well as what technologists call a “reference platform,” a set of specifications for how hardware makers would build a phone based on that software. Google is also beefing up its mobile applications, and it is believed to be creating software to ensure those apps run smoothly on as many phones as possible.

In a way, that looks a lot like what Microsoft does with Windows Mobile and Symbian does with its mobile operating system. Yet no one really talks about the “Microsoft Phone.” Rather, there’s the Motorola Q running Windows Mobile, the Palm Treo running Windows Mobile and so forth. So maybe speaking of the Google Phone is a bit of misnomer. Maybe we should simply be talking about the, well, we don’t yet know who will make these phones, but say if it were HTC, we would talk about the HTC phone running Google’s mobile Linux.

Then again, there is the possibility, raised by some analysts, that Google could decide to brand or co-brand phones with some manufacturers. In such a case, there really would be a Google Phone. It would also be the first time that Google would be pushing a consumer device, and as some people have noted, it could create conflicts for Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who sits on the board of iPhone maker Apple.

    Hide folders with invisible trick

In mobile market, mobile software on October 11, 2007 at 7:28 am

Accrding to Jeff Dempsey You ever have a folder on your computer that you really dont want any one to find? You can make this folder hidden but then you have to un-hide all the folders when ever you want to find it. So how can you make a folder truly invisible? Follow these simple steps and your unmentionables will stay that way.

    1. Right click where ever you want the invisible folder to be and select create a new folder.

    stepone.jpg
    2. Right Click on the folder and hit rename. Erase the name of the folder so there is nothing there.

    3. If you try to stop here windows will tell you that you need to provide a name. So to get around this… with the name field still active hold down ALT and press 0160 on the number pad (make sure Num Lock is on), release alt

    step2.jpg

You should now have a blank name with nothing but a folder next to it

    4. Now click on the nameless folder and right click. Select Properties.

    step4.jpg

    5. Go to the Customize tab.

    step5.jpg

    6. Find and press the Change Icon button. Scroll through the icons until you find one that has no image.

    step6.jpg

    4. Hit OK and you have an invisible folder!

    invisible.jpg

With the invisible folder you can hide what ever undesirables you have. Be it video games at work, pictures of your family or anything else you can think of “wink”.

The folder will show up for a brief second if you put it on your desktop. For that reason it might be smart to place it inside a folder or amongst a group of folders.

5 ways to secure your mac

In Reviews, mac on October 10, 2007 at 6:52 am

Mac users: you’re most likely not running any virus scanners or spyware killers, but you’re just as vulnerable to careless computing habits that could compromise your system as anyone else. Macworld lists five ways you can secure your Mac, including:

    • Use admin accounts for administration only
    • Don’t share user accounts
    • Turn on password prompts
    • Encrypt sensitive files (Ed: more on that)
    • Attach a security cable

While most people probably have never used that lock slot for a security cable (have you?), the rest of these are just good habits to get into regardless of operating system

The company already owns a significant minority stake (39 percent) of Alibaba Group, the parent of Alibaba.com. It would be buying a stake directly in the B2B site. As Loren Baker explains, Yahoo doesn’t own its foreign sites, which are typically operated as joint ventures with local control.

  • Mac Marketshare at Universities Booming?

In Money, mobile, mobile market on October 8, 2007 at 5:43 am

    Mac News

The DailyPrincetonian reports on a growing trend amongst at least some universities.

The Princeton University newspaper reports that Princeton’s Mac marketshare has been rising dramatically, with 40 percent of students and faculty currently using a Mac as their personal computer. This number is up from only 10% of Mac users on campus only 4 years ago. And this number could still be growing. This year, the University’s Student Computer Initiative reportedly sold more Macs than PC’s, with 60 percent of students choosing a Mac, up from 45 percent just last year. Students were offered a choice of Dell, IBM and Apple computers.

This follows a recent report that looked at a similar trend at many other colleges. According to a separate Pioneer Press survey, Dartmouth is up to 55% freshman with Macs (up from 30% in 2005), University of Virginia with 20% of freshman with Macs (up from 17% in 2006), and Cornell with 21% dorm network users with a Mac (up from 5% between 2000-2002).

PioneerPress attributes the uptick in sales to the popularity of the iPod, security of Mac OS X, design and ease of use.

These numbers are much higher than the general population, in which Mac marketshare numbers have been hovering around 5-6%. (All of these figures may not be directly comparable, as marketshare numbers typically represent new sales in a particular time-period rather than the installed base. Regardless, the numbers are still significantly higher than would be expected.)

    Is this the BlackBerry 9xxx?

In google, mobile on October 4, 2007 at 10:26 am

Just in case you’d been getting tired of iPhone rumors, Zune 2 leaks, and more Centro “in the wild” shots than you can really stomach, we’ve got something to alleviate the pressure. Enter the Photoshopped yet appropriately-blurry, rumored next phase of the Research In Motion takeover… the BlackBerry 9xxx. Okay, adjust your eyeballs and listen up — according to the Boy Genius Report, the new device is slated to launch sometime in early 2008, and will be delivering mouth-watering goods like HSDPA-ified 3G, a 600Mhz processor, and an integrated backup / restore function which should help keep the suits from sweating themselves out of their expensive leather office chairs. Of course, this is all deeply, deeply unconfirmed at the moment, though the Boy Genius says he has a source. We suggest taking it with a grain of salt — but feel free to dream

Want to make an appointment to see the doctor!Doctor 2.0 is here

In News, Technology on October 4, 2007 at 5:42 am

    Jay Parkinson

While ZocDoc is busy creating a platform for doctors to interact with their patients, Dr. Jay Parkinson figures he already has the tools he needs to run a Web 2.0-style medical practice.

Want to make an appointment to see the doctor? Check out his Google Calendar for availability and shoot Parkinson a text message or e-mail. He’ll text you back and then make a house call with as little as an hour’s notice. He doesn’t have an office. Instead he has e-mail, instant messenger, and a cellphone. And Parkinson uses Life Record to keep his medical records online.

Parkinson is based in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood, where he is targeting young creative professionals, many of whom are freelancers. That means they don’t have full time jobs with health benefits. So he charges $500 a year for an initial checkup and up to 2 house calls. If you need more, you can pay per visit. If you need a specialist, he’ll direct you to one. Since Parkinson isn’t part of a medical network, he’s contacted thousands of NY area doctors to discover specialists with the lowest prices for a variety of procedures.

What do you think? House calls are great and all, but would you be willing to see a doctor that doesn’t even have an office?

Justin.tv opens its lifecasting platform to anyone with a webcam

In News on October 4, 2007 at 5:11 am

    Justin.tv

First there was Justin. For the past few months, you’ve been able to watch life through the eyes (or camera) of a guy named Justin who has been broadcasting his life on the internet 24 hours a day. Then there was Justine, a conveniently named blogger who stepped to wear the dorky hat. Gradually, Justin.tv has added more and more channels to its “lifecasting” platform, and today the team has announced that they are opening up the platform to pretty much anyone who doesn’t mind sharing their lives over the web.

You’ll need to be 13 or older to participate, and obviously you’ll need a webcam, computer, and internet connection. The Justin.tv front page makes flipping from channel to channel a breeze. There’s a Cover Flow-like interface that you can scroll through, or if you know the name of the channel you want to see, you can use the search bar. But honestly, there’s something kind of compelling about flipping from one lifecast to the next. It’s kind of like flipping TV channels hoping that you’ll land on something interesting, even though you know there’s nothing good on.

Microsoft has released Bungie Studios from its ownership

In Microsoft on October 4, 2007 at 4:47 am

According to an email received by the Post-Intelligencer, Microsoft has released Bungie Studios from its ownership. The deal is apparently done, but Microsoft wishes to hold the public announcement until after October 6 for the protection of quarterly financial results.

The email reads: “Apparently MS just wants Bungie to make Halo for the rest of their natural days, and Bungie doesn’t like how MS is constantly trying to “handle” everything they do; the way they market their games, the way they interact with their fans (basically the fact that they do appreciate their fans), and how stingie [sic] they are with the profits (comparable to the rest of the industry). So as of today they are their own independent entity.”

Game Informer checked with its own sources and reports that Bungie and Microsoft separated on October 1, 2007. According to the magazine, Bungie did not wish to be tied down to indefinitely making Halo games. As a result, shareholders of Bungie bought the studio name back from Microsoft for “an unstated, but significant amount of money.”

Microsoft will retain all rights to the Halo franchise, assuring that the Master Chief will never grace competitors’ systems, and will also hold “the right of first refusal on future games,” meaning that Halo 3 probably won’t be the last Xbox 360 exclusive title from Bungie Studios.
