  • Sony will close its music store

In Money, music on August 31, 2007 at 10:25 am

Sony plans to close its music store, Connect, sometime after March 2008.

Apple’s iTunes, was never actually threatened by Sony’s misguided download service, of course. The company’s attempt to compete in the digital music market was from the start marked by glitchy software and disinterested consumers.

Sony claims the reason it scrapped Connect is that the company has “widened its digital music environment” to support Windows Media. But the story of how Connect was doomed from the start is well chronicled.

The project was self-sabotaged by politicking and infighting on the Connect development team.

When Sony launched Connect, the software was so buggy that the company resorted to telling frustrated customers to go back to using pre-Connect software, SonicStage. Sony’s U.S. operations went so far as to refuse releasing Connect.

Dell profit up 46 percent due to cheaper components

In Dell, Money on August 31, 2007 at 9:54 am

Dell reported a profit of $733 million for its fiscal 2008 second quarter, up 46 percent from its mark of $502 million for the same period last year.

The strong result was driven by sales to enterprise customers, an increase in the selling prices of Dell PCs, and a drop in component costs, the company said.

Dell recorded revenue of $14.8 billion for the quarter ending Aug. 3, generating earnings of $0.32 per share. Both figures were above Wall Street expectations of $14.63 billion revenue and $0.30 earnings per share, according to analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial.

However, Dell warned investors to be cautious when comparing the figures to past quarters because the company plans to restate its earnings for the past four years. Dell plans to revise its quarterly and annual financial statements for fiscal 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and the first quarter of 2007.c

Another Laptop Explodes… But Who’s at Fault?

In Gadget on August 30, 2007 at 7:54 am

This issue didn’t get a lot of press when it happened late last week, perhaps because laptops going up in flames has become a tired, almost cliched, story. But laptops (in this case, yet another Dell) are still catching fire.

The twist is that the battery that caused the fire in question was one of the ones recalled last year. Laptop battery fires were probably the biggest technology story of 2006, but here we are well into the latter half of 2007 and people are still using computers with recalled batteries. I’d have a little sympathy for a little old lady who only used her laptop to check AOL and never kept abreast of technology news… but the owner of the laptop was a computer network administrator at a hospital. In other words: The guy is probably paid to know about this stuff!

Still, it leads one to ask whether Dell has been absolved of responsibility here. What happens if a consumer never hears about a product recall and that product causes a problem? What if the consumer did hear the recall alert, but chose to ignore it? Where does Dell’s responsibility end and the buyer’s begin? Gizmodo has asked for legal input on the subject, and I’d like to hear it too. I’m inclined to side with Dell on this one (the computer companies did a decent job of handling the recall in my opinion), but U.S. law is a strange beast. What does the law really say on topics like this?

Nokia really doesn’t like people calling it’s devices “phones” The trouble is, the alternatives are pretty clunky. The new 500 Auto Navigation, Nokia’s first stand-alone navigator, gets the tongue-twisting moniker handsfree dedicated personal navigation device. Catchy.

The GPS unit doubles as a Bluetooth handsfree set, and the regionally-tuned mapping software can offer up contact details of points along the way, which means a quick click-to-call without looking up numbers for, say, hotels and restaurants.

A built in MP3 player will beam tunes to your car radio via FM, and there are photo slideshow and video functions for times when the split screen traffic info service fails to bail you out of gridlock. Due in Europe this fall for €300 ($410), with a Worldwide rollout soon after.

HTC Working to launch Google Phone

Foollowing to our last post on Gphone There have been a buzz on internet about possible launch of Gphone but Google the internet giant can not push its phone just with out any real buzz. Many Bloggers note that google will have its viral wom camaign on internet  much better that IPHONE had but not for too long.

Also few industry reports says that its undertesting and  HTC is working with Google to launch a Google Phone in the first quarter of 2008. “Google is currently assessing over twenty HTC models and refining its final handset design and will create a special version of Google Maps, compatible with built-in GPS, and compatibility with Gmail and the calendar app. There is also some talk that Samsung will be releasing gPhone handsets as well, but that has not been confirmed…One extremely interesting point? Google Talk will become a part of the phone, adding VoIP capability to the hardware.” This last bit isn’t very surprising—I’m betting on any Google handset to have WiFi access, and/or to work on any spectrum that Google may win in the upcoming auction in the US

    Average loyalty rate decreases

Symbian has reported a 52 percent increase in shipments of handsets with its smartphone operating platform in the second quarter to hit 18.7 million handsets, due mainly to the recent success enjoyed by Nokia.

It has also reduced the average royalty rate from $5.70 down ot $4.30 to “reflect the downward trend of phone costs in the market”. I guess Nokia being its biggest customer and owning 47.9 percent of the company had something to do with that. Symbian’s revenue increased by 7 percent to 44.1 million pounds (US$88.21 million) reports Dow Jones. Symbian said 145 million handsets have been shipped with its operating system since it was founded in 1998

    Reasons To Replace Your Iphone

In iphone on August 29, 2007 at 6:44 am

In any case here´s a list of reasons as to why I am not replacing my iPhone.

    1. Even though the method of writing text is much better on the iPhone than the N95 or most other telephones, it is still not nearly as good as the Blackberry’s key pad, and if you have to work, the Blackberry is your best tool.
    2. The iPhone does not have GPS. I arrived at that infamous party in Mallorca where my iPhone was stolen by using my Blackberry’s GPS (the taxi driver didn’t even know the way). I have been a portable GPS device addict ever since they first came out. I always used to have a Garmins on me, and now both the N95 and Blackberry 8800 have GPS, and I use them a lot because I spend one third of each month traveling. Both the Blackberry and Nokia have been smart enough to build social features around GPS. This summer, for example, while sailing we’d know where to meet up with our friends by sending them our coordinates using the “send location” function.
    3. The iPhone does not have filming capacity, an essential tool for a blogger like me. For me, the N95’s video camera is presently the best of any telephone on the market.
    4. The iPhone’s camera is only 2 megapixels and photo quality is much worse than that of the Nokia N80 and N95, and the photos end up looking pretty crappy on Flickr.
    5. The same aesthetics that make the iPhone so attractive also make it incredibly slippery and it can easily fall out of your pocket (I still don’t know if someone pick-pocketed me or if it fell out of my pocket onto the floor). Plus after only one month, it was already scratched and the iPhone is extremely difficult to use without scratching its screen. Sorry, but I am not the kind of person who is going to walk around using the iPhone cover as if it were a pair of glasses. The iPhone is like an iPod: who has an iPod that is not scratched? And in this case, the screen is what is most important about the iPhone and its best quality. It’s being scratched so easily is a horrible design defect.
    6. The only videos you can see on the iPhone are those from YouTube, not the ones I have created and want to store its memory using a video player. The iPhone is great for Web 2.0 users who want to receive videos, but not for those who want to help build the Web 2.0.
    7. Even though the iPhone is the best iPod out there in terms of functionality, it will not be replacing my 60 giga iPod anytime soon. I have 43 gigas of music that I listen to. I go biking and want to listen to whatever I feel like: Maroon 5, Ella Fitzgerald, Gorillaz, Fatboy Slim, Carlos Gardel, Johnny Cash, Caetano Veloso. In a two hour sprint, I like to alternate my music, and the iPhone with all of its functionalities is limited to only 4 or 8 gigas.
    8. The iPhone does not have Chat, and I use Google Talk on both my Blackberry and Nokia. SMS is a rip off in general, so I prefer to Chat on my phones.
    9. The iPhone does not have Gmail which I have integrated into my Blackberry and Nokia. From the iPhone Twitter is incredibly complicated. I have to go through Safari while with the Blackberry and Nokia, I can send messages directly to Twitter through Google Talk.
    10. There is no search function. This sounds hard to believe, but the iPhone doesn’t let you search amongst your contacts except by going from letter to letter. It has a favorite contacts feature, but the quantity is fairly limited (I don’t remember exactly how much).
    11. I can download applications to the Blackberry and Nokia, but can’t download them to the iPhone. One of my favorite applications for Nokia is Fring. With Fring, I can use Skype, IM, Google Talk, and can call for free from my Nokia when there is WiFi or if I have a fixed 3G plan.
    12. Although it sounds unbelievable, iPhone does not have VOIP. This is ridiculous. The iPhone has sold out to AT&T to such an extent that it doesn’t allow you to put voice over WiFi as with the N95.
    13. The iPhone does not have push email. You can only get your emails by asking for them periodically and not automatically.
    14. And yes, Fon is WiFi and we love WiFi but let´s be frank, there´s not WiFi everywhere and when there isn´t my N95 has 3G while the iPhone only had 2G.

    Israeli Computer Engineers hacked Iphone

In apple, iphone on August 29, 2007 at 6:32 am

Israeli computer engineers have managed to hack Apple’s iPhone system. They were able to make it available for use through Israeli carriers Cellcom and Orange, local daily Yedioth Ahronoth reported on its website on Sunday.

The three were also able to give the iPhone a Hebrew interface, thus breaking Apple’s restriction.

The three hackers are not ready to share how they got the iPhone to work, but did say that practically anyone could do it, said the report.

Apple launched the iPhone in June, granting AT&T and a few European carriers an exclusive two-year distribution deal.

However, this is lower than other estimates reports CNews, noting that iKS-Consulting puts the internet mobile content revenue in Russia at $408 million last year, and expects it to grow 21 percent to about $494 million this year. Orange proposes that an “open and transparent” trial is conducted to evaluate the Nokia music store using the 8GB handset to compare results with the 1GB variant that would only use Orange’s own music download service. “If this proposal is not accepted, we will regrettably be forced to derange this handset,” the memo warned. The memo said it wants to source larges volumes of “the exclusive blue N81″ but that if Nokia does not agree to the trial, it will work with other handset makers to fill the gap. Orange has set a deadline of 31 August for Nokia to agree to the trials.

    How to stop spam emails

In spam emails on August 28, 2007 at 9:46 am

While spam filters have gotten better over the years, meaning that email spam is now “manageable” for most people, some people are apparently arguing that a better solution to stopping spammers is to go after the web hosts who host the sites advertised in spam. That sounds nice in theory, but in practice it doesn’t make that much sense.

Spam is a huge and growing problem. Ideas on how to stop email spam come id many forms, this course will look at some of the most effective and show you step by step hoe to use them to free your email inbox from this curse of the 21st century.

    1. Non Cloaked emails on websites

This is actually one of the most easy way to get spam. I’ve talked to a system administrator in the office and she expressed surprise at not knowing about this. Most people start building a website on free webhosts and then add their email address at the bottom of the website. While this is good for website usability which is a separate topic altogether, it allows unscrupulous people to harvest your email address with powerful online website crawling programs. What these programs do is crawl websites and then classify them and sell the extracted leads to lead vendors. So if your website is about health, they might classify your extracted email address as a health lead and sell it to other marketers to email to you.

The simple solution to this problem is to do email cloaking. This is usually a simple script which breaks up your email into two parts when a robot on the internet crawls your website. But to the normal user who looks at it, the browser combines it together to show a normal email address. Do a simple google search for “email cloaking script” and you should be able to do this by copying the script into your website.

So then you prevent spam and at the same time allow people to continue to contact you.

Another simpler solution which may confound some of your website users who are not so internet savvy is just to do use /at/ instead of @. So for instance your email will read Abc/at/abc.com rather than abc@abc.com. However as mentioned, if your target audience is older and not so good with the internet, this may be a problem and prevent them from contacting you.

    2. Spam via cookies or malicious code or programs

Spyware flooding your computer is a real problem. Most people do not really realize this until they find popups suddenly appearing when they reach some pages or find that their starting page has been high jacked by some website. When you visit a website like Yahoo and log in, a cookie is deposited into your computer browser to tell Yahoo that you have logged in to their system. These cookies have short life spans and self delete when you log out of the system.

However there are some websites that have cookies for the sole purpose of tracking all email sent into and out of your computer when the browser is on. It then tracks your name and email address and sends it secretly to a central server where it then sells you name and email address to email lists. Thus some people report an increase in spam after visiting certain websites and this may be the reason.

Another reason for spam can be attributed to malicious code which can possibly install itself into your browser without you knowing it and does the same thing as the cookies in the above example but on a longer term basis as the cookies would be deleted when you clear your cookies and cache in your browser. Some of this malicious code can even do keyword logging and send your passwords and bank IDs to the programmer who came up with the code!

The best solution to the problem is to download the Mozilla Firefox Internet browser which has a built in security system which prevents such malicious code from being installed into your web browser without your knowledge and allows you to clear your cache and cookies easily. I do this on a constant basis to prevent my email inbox from being filled with spam.

    3. Spyware via free programs installed

Another reason why there is an increase in spam is that there are third party spyware that is bundled with free software which is why the software is free in the first place because the spyware companies pay the programmer to bundle it with their software. Always look at the agreement before downloading any free wallpapers or free programs like weather programs as there could be a possibility that spyware could be bundled together with it and flood your email box with spam.

The best solution is to download Spyware Search and Destroy or Lavasoft’s Adaware anti-spyware programs to detect and clear any spyware from your computer. In addition, you might find that your computer might run faster when you are connected to the internet as the spyware does take up some bandwidth in its communication to the central server.

    4. Random emails

Some of the more powerful email programs have the ability to flood servers with permutations of email addresses. This means that they can basically email anyone online because they have powerful computers which run software which blasts emails to all permutations and one of them may be yours.

The more legitimate marketers will have an opt out link at the bottom of the email so that you can actually opt out of the list. On the other hand, some of the real offshore spammers have servers in China and Russia so when you do click on the link to opt out, it actually confirms that your email address is working so ironically sometimes it is best to just delete spam rather than reply to it.

    5. Free offers

Some spam in your inbox (not legally spam) may be from free offers. When you signup for some online service, there is thing called co-registration where they have many boxes for you to tick. Generally what this means is you are asking the online service to send your email address and name to an online marketer who is going to sell it to others to email to. While this is not spam as you have opted into it, it may become irritating after a while.

The better solution that I do personally is to create an email from Yahoo for the sole purpose of free offers so that I can let that email be flooded with spam. So you can get the free offer and not face the possibility of deleting 500 spam emails daily in your personal email inbox.

In conclusion, spam can be reduced if you are aware of the reasons and the ways in which online marketers and spammers can get your email. Taking an active step today to prevent them from getting your personal email is a great step forward to reducing the amount of spam you have in your inbox.

Palm Introduces Slim and light T|X handheld

In Best mobiles on August 28, 2007 at 8:22 am

While the device is quite slim and light, and has a black-and-silver colour scheme that looks tasty, you wont find it quite as solid as some of the companys previous handhelds. Still, this is a sharp.

With built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth® technology, this is the wireless device you’ve been waiting for. Browse the web and check email from your office, campus, or a home Wi-Fi network—and places like airports, cafes, and hotels1. Carry your Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files2 and get more done anywhere. Web pages, presentations, spreadsheets, photos, and videos come to life on a large color screen that rotates from landscape to portrait mode. Have time to unwind? The Palm TX handheld even lets you listen to MP3s3 and read eBooks. It’s anything but business as usual.

    A user story

After running around the world with Palm’s E2 and having to switch my SD storage card for my Wi-Fi card and not being able to download files I decided to bite the bullet and purchase Palm’s T|X.

Upon opening the flashy business box the T|X gleems like a new penny. After a 3 hr initial charge I got to play with the T|X’s features. Doc2GO, Versimail, and bluetooth connectivity all worked like a champ. The media program played mp3s and showed pictures on a beautiful landscape or vertical screen in millions of colors. The most impressive feature was the ease of use of the built-in Wi-Fi. I detected not only my home’s network but 3 others in my neighborhood. I took my T|X on the road for the first time and connected to the hotel Wi-Fi without any trouble.

My only complaint would be with the battery life is not a long as I would like it to be but there are ways to get your battery to last longer. (i.e. turn off BT or Wi-Fi when not in use). Also, I am not a big fan of the 2 wire set up on the latest Palm products. 2 ports on the bottom of the device, one for hotsync and the other for power. What ever happened to the cradle? If your USB port supports 500 mA power you can “trickle charge” your T|X through it’s USB cable and not the power charger. Word to the wise though…”trickle charge” takes up to 9 hrs vs 3 hrs on the power charger. The other 2 items I highly recommend is the hard case to protect your purchase and a 1 or 2 GB SD card so you can work and download from you Wi-Fi connections.

So, if you don’t need to be connected all the time and don’t want the monthly cost of a data plan on a smartphone like the 700w or Motorola Q but still want processing power, internet connectivity, and a robust email program for all your email needs then this sleek, beautiful, handheld is for you

Yahoo will Add SMS to Its Webmail serivce

In Best mobiles on August 27, 2007 at 1:06 pm

Yahoo is updating its e-mail client, and among other things is the ability to send free text messages to a mobile phone number from within Yahoo Mail. This service will work in the US, Canada, India and the Philippines in real-time, although only on certain carriers (which will be published in the Help pages of Yahoo Mail).

Of course, the people receiving the messages on their phones may have to pay for that, and to reply via SMS. Yahoo is also adding instant messaging capability to Yahoo Mail (such as Google has) which will allow access to Yahoo Messenger and Windows Live Messenger. Perhaps more impressively, people will also be able to “easily convert their e-mail messages into IM chats or switch to a text message dialogue with the click of a button, when friends come online or go mobile, and vice-versa”.

In apple, iphone on August 27, 2007 at 12:46 pm

Unsurprisingly AT&T has moved to prevent the sale of software which can unlock the iPhone, allowing it to be used on any GSM carrier. “John McLaughlin, founder of Uniquephones, based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, said Saturday that he received a phone call about 3 a.m. Saturday local time from a man claiming to be from O’Melveny & Myers LLP, an international law firm, calling on behalf of AT&T. The firm has worked with Apple in the past…The man informed McLaughlin that if he posted the unlock code, he could be sued for copyright infringement and for dissemination of Apple’s intellectual property (IP)” reports IDG News Service. The plan was to release the iPhone on saturday at www.iphoneunlocking.com, but that has now been delayed

Video advertising industry to grow to $2.9 billion by 2010

While YouTube’s announcement that they will start including ads in video comes as little surprise, there are already dozens of companies vying for a piece of the video advertising industry, which is expected to grow to $2.9 billion by 2010 according to eMarketer. Here is a look at 10 of the top players in the market, ranging from startups to some of the Web’s biggest companies.

BrightRoll offers both pre-roll (meaning ads before a video plays) and mid-roll (ads that take place between segments of a video) advertising and places ads based on contextual, behavioral and demographic targeting. To determine content, BrightRoll looks at information like tags and keyword profiles, while using data for its publishers from ComScore to create demographic-based campaigns. The company claims to be the fastest growing video advertising company with more than 800 million ads served.

Flickr Joins Nikon on Digital Learning Center.

In Nikon on August 24, 2007 at 1:27 pm

An update to our post ON Nikon has teamed up with Flickr to launch a sponsored educational activity on the photo-sharing site, called the Nikon Digital Learning Center.

This will provide tips and tutorials for photographers, as well as a space for photographers to discuss related topics with Nikon School instructors Reed Hoffman and Bill Durrence in a live chat. Professional photographers Rosanne Pennella and Cliff Mautner will also be making themselves available for live chats through this educational learning center as well.

This is a great way for camera companies to grow brand loyalty and increase recognition, and what better place to do this than Flickr? Pentax is another camera company that’s taking a social approach to promoting its own products, launching a selective, community-voted gallery of photographers.

Orkut is rolling out a new design this morning, starting with a select number of users. It’s a much-needed change to the previously ugly social network that became unintentionally popular in Brazil.

But what’s we’re really hoping for from Google is the launch of SocialStream, the aggregated social network they’re supposedly developing. LiveJournal founder Brad Fitzpatrick, who has been talking seriously about a format for aggregation, just moved over to Google: a sign that something is cooking.

Google is enhancing its Google Maps Service With Street Views

In Gadget, google on August 24, 2007 at 12:06 pm

In an unprecedented campaign, Google is enhancing its Google Maps service with a new Street View feature that allows you to view crisp, navigable photos of roads in nine major cities across the United States, including San Francisco, New York, San Diego, and Denver. (To see the full list, go to maps.google.com and click the Street View link on the upper-right corner.)

Once you zoom in close enough, you can click the Street View link and look around the location, or click an arrow to see the next Street View photo.

To snap the pictures, Google mounted digital cameras on the roof of passenger cars — reportedly Chevy Cobalts, according to the tech blog Gizmodo — and drove around San Francisco and San Diego.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company partnered with Immersive Media for the underlying photo technology and has worked with third-party firms for street-level photography for the additional cities outside of California. Only San Francisco and San Diego use high-resolution street-level images, however. Other cities use lower-res captures.

Street View could be a boon for “landmark drivers” who prefer driving instructions such as “Turn left at the large brick church, and drive until you get to the pizza place on the corner” as opposed to “Meet me at Second Street and Fourth Avenue.” It certainly reveals how far Google will go to prove its mapping prowess — and, incidentally, attract users to more localized advertising.

According to Greg Sterling at Sterling Market Intelligence in Oakland, Calif., Google has a Business Referral Representative program that sets a precedent for localized involvement. That program involves Google representatives providing local business information and photos to Google for a fee. Sterling said that precedent for collecting local information and photos is being continued with the Street View program. Street View is “about creating more utility for consumers, which in turn will lead indirectly to ad revenue over the longer term. Google has long focused on small businesses and local users, so this is just trying to take those efforts to the next level,” Sterling said.

Still, regardless of whether Street View is purely a mapping enhancement or a new play for ad revenue, there is tough competition from Microsoft and others. There are also some nagging privacy issues to deal with, plus the sheer magnitude of the project

    Traditional Media vs Internet

In Best mobiles on August 24, 2007 at 10:12 am

These days there was a little war on the Internet in Spain when the leading TV chain in Spain, TVE, ran a show in which they showed how easy it was to vandalize Wikipedia. And what´s worse, after vandalizing some articles, the producers of the show did not even bother to correct the changes. As Microsoft likes to point out that Open Source is not safe to use traditional media´s attack on the Internet generally centers around proving that the Internet is not a trustworthy source of information. In the meantime the value of “reliable” traditional media companies keeps shrinking. Personally I think that the world needs both, professional journalists with great integrity and the user generated content of blogs and Wikipedia. But I can understand why as journalists start feeling that their jobs are being taken by bloggers who compete with their readers attention and do not demand payment other than the occasional Google Ad would react violently and attack the Internet. In the end, this is a foolish strategy. The internet is more reliable than traditional media not because it can´t be wrong (it frequently is) but because it is self correcting. Needless to say the articles that were vandalized have by now been fixed.

    WIFI Stealing IS Crime

In WiFi on August 24, 2007 at 7:48 am

A few months ago British police were cautioning people who steal Wifi, now it seems they are really cracking down – even arresting a man for picking up an unsecured Wifi signal. According to the Daily Mail, a 39-year-old man was held after two police community support officers became suspicious when they spotted him using a laptop computer on a garden wall (sounds a little like Humpty Dumpty, doesn’t it?).

When questioned, the man admitted to using someone else’s unsecured wi-fi broadband connection outside a house. He now faces a fine, six months in prison (or both), under the under section one of the Computer Misuse Act and Section 125 of the Communications Act 2003.

The punishments sound slightly exaggerated and unfounded to me – I mean if people leave their wireless networks unsecured they’re almost asking for it. It’s like leaving candy on your doorstep and thinking neighborhood kids aren’t going to snack on it. What do you think?

Eight Years After Changing Professional Photography Forever, Nikon Does It Again By Introducing The D3 Digital SLREight years after Nikon’s D1 camera changed professional digital photography forever, Nikon today introduced the D3 – a new digital SLR camera that is poised to once again revolutionize photography for professionals. The 12.1 effective megapixel D3 features Nikon’s new FX-format CMOS sensor, measuring 23.9 x 36mm, which is nearly identical to the size of 35mm film. With the fastest startup time, shortest viewfinder blackout time, and shortest shutter lag of any digital SLR camera as well as the capability to shoot up to nine frames per second at full FX-format resolution, the D3 is the world’s fastest digital SLR camera in its class.*

Designed with sports photographers and photojournalists in mind, the Nikon D3 introduces an astounding list of brand new features and technologies that make it the most sophisticated and advanced Nikon digital SLR to date. In addition to the new FX-format CMOS sensor, the D3 incorporates Nikon’s new EXPEED Image Processing System that is central to the blazing speed and processing power needed for many of the D3’s new features.

Images taken with the D3 reflect exceptional overall quality, broad tonal range and depth, along with extremely low-noise throughout its normal ISO range of 200 to 6400. By setting the camera to its built-in options of Lo-1 or Hi-2, the ISO range of the camera can be expanded to the equivalent of ISO 100 or ISO 25,600 respectively, offering unmatched versatility in practically any shooting situation.

The D3 also features an entirely new 51-point auto focus system with Nikon’s 3D Focus Tracking feature and two new LiveView shooting modes that allow photographers to frame a photograph using the camera’s high-resolution LCD monitor. The D3 uses the world’s first Scene Recognition System to greatly enhance the accuracy of auto focus, auto exposure and auto white balance detection in the camera by recognizing the subject or scene being photographed and applying this information to the calculations for the three functions.

Greystripe says its ad-supported games have been downloaded 14 million times in 12 months

In Greystripe on August 23, 2007 at 11:42 am

The self-declared download volumes were split between its Greystripe site and third party distributors.  US-based Greystripe’s catalogue includes 800 games by 70 publishers. The company says that during the last 12 months its users have played an average of 3.4 games, with the male-to-female ratio almost equal. The early morning commute and lunch breaks are the most popular time of the day to play mobile games with 9am, 1pm and 2pm the peak download times. Michael Chang, CEO of Greystripe, said: “Now mobile gaming joins radio, internet, and television as a form of entertainment that can be offered free to the consumer, supported by advertising in our case, before and after a consumer plays our titles.” Greystripe’s patent-pending AdWRAP technology automates the process that enables advertisements to be wrapped directly with mobile games and applications without any complex coding and development for the content owner. Truth About Iphone Nano

In iphone on August 23, 2007 at 11:32 am

Since its release nearly two months ago, the iPhone has proven to be a rather disruptive device, not only in the mobile market, but on the web as well. With designers and developers scrambling to get a foothold in this new market, issues have surfaced and (in many cases) tempers have flared.

ipod-nano-spyshotThe folks at Gizmodo apparently posted up a supposed spy shot of the upcoming iPhone nano, but shortly after doing that they apparently received a dossier from the legal eagles at Apple, politely asking them to remove those spy shots due to the fact that they’re still “intellectual property”. At least the spy shots confirm that the device in question definitely belongs to Apple, although it cannot be confirmed as at press time as to whether it is the final product or still a fledgling prototype.

Are you excited about the prospect of holding a brand new iPhone nano in your hands sometime down the future? Will the user experienced be “gimped” as certain quarters speculate? I think the iPhone nano will still generate a whole lot of buzz and even more sales, but as to whether it is a gadget worthy of long time love, that remains to be seen.

Nokia wants our brainstormed ideas for finding best applications

    US Wireless Data Market Update – Q2 & 1H 2007

In Money, Wireless Report, wireless on August 23, 2007 at 7:50 am

US wireless data market continued its impressive growth reaching $5.85B in service revenues for the quarter. Data and Voice ARPU increased 8% and 1% Quarter/Quarter (Q/Q) respectively. Given that majority of the data revenues now comes from non-messaging applications and services and the subscriber penetration for such services is just getting into the inflection zone, we remain bullish on the US wireless data market. The introduction of iPhone in Q2 marked a new era of UX-driven devices and applications.

    • US Wireless data market grew 7% Q/Q to $5.85B in Q207. For the first half of 2007, the US wireless data service revenues stood at $11.35B jumping 81.6% from 1H06.
    • Overall ARPU increased by $1.05 Q/Q to $53.62 due to strong data performance and stable voice ARPU. The untold story has been the surprising resiliency of Voice ARPU over the past 3 quarters. Data ARPU grew 8% from Q107 and 19% from Q406 to $9.04. As estimated in our Q107 update, Verizon overtook Sprint in data ARPU with a 13% increase from its Q107 numbers to $9.84 while Sprint’s data ARPU increased only by 5% to $9.75. AT&T’s data ARPU increased by 11% to $8.77 and T-Mobile’s 4% jump accounted for its $7.8 data ARPU for Q207.
    • The strongest growth continues to come from Verizon, accounting for almost 31% of industry’s data revenue in Q207. Its data service revenues jumped by 13% Q/Q to $1.8B. Verizon was followed by AT&T at $1.65B, Sprint at $1.2B, and T-Mobile at $613M.
    • The % contribution of data to service revenues jumped from 14.5% to almost 17% in Q207 and is certainly going to cross 20% by the end of this year. Considering the market was only at 6% in 2004, it is a significant improvement in 3 years. Verizon led in % data contribution to ARPU with 19% followed by AT&T at 17.3%, Sprint at 16.3%, and T-Mobile at 15%.
    • As we have been discussing in our quarterly updates, the net-adds continue to decline for the industry. The current net-adds rate for the year is 1.65M subs/month down from 1.92M subs/month in 2006 and 2M subs/month in 2005.
    • The US wireless industry crossed 80% subscription penetration in Q207. Though the growth rate has expectedly slowed down, there is still plenty of room for growth over the next five years.
    • The top three US carriers again maintained their respective rankings amongst the top 10 global carriers in terms of data revenues. For the year, Verizon with $3.4B, AT&T with $3.2B, and Sprint with $2.4B in service data revenues stood at #4, 5, and 6 respectively with Verizon closing in on KDDI for the number 3 spot.
    • AT&T stemmed the tide of losing customers to Verizon with the strongest performance in terms of net-adds in Q2 adding almost 1.5M new subscriptions. While the distance between the two giants is getting closer, AT&T is likely to stay perched at the top with most subs in the US market for the remainder of 2007. iPhone mania and 3G penetration helped in gaining new subs.
    • Q2 marked the demise of another high profile MVNO – Amp’D. Boasting $100 ARPU in Q1, the company couldn’t control the burn rate and cost of customer acquisition resulting in a spectacular crash.
    • Q2 also saw the folding of the DVB-H camp in the US with the mobile broadcast market firmly in the hands of MediaFLO.
    • Non-messaging data revenues continue to be in the 50-60% range for the US carriers. T-Mobile recorded $644M or 53% of its data revenues from non-messaging applications and services during 1H07.
    • Verizon recorded 10B TXT messages in June setting a record of messaging volume at a single carrier. For the quarter 28.3B TXT messages were sent on its network. AT&T recorded 18B TXT messages for the quarter.
    • There was tremendous activity in the area of Mobile Advertising with the acquisitions of Third Screen Media, Telephia, and ScreenTonic. We just finished a comprehensive book on the subject. More details in the coming months.
    • In 1H07, 203 private companies announced $2.3B in venture financing down from $3.6B in 2H06 and $2.9B in 1H06. Source: Rutberg. Mobile TV/Video, Mobile Personalization, Mobile Search and Advertising, Semiconductor, Carrier infrastructure, Device design and development are hot areas. M&A activity also picked up quite significantly. Intel Capital and Sequoia Capital opened their purses the most. We also saw 7 major IPOs with Aruba performing the best and Glu performing the worst. Other notables were Clearwire, Airvana, and MetroPCS.
    • Nokia eclipsed 100M unit sale in Q207 for the second time in history (first being in Q406). Its 1H07 tally stood at 191.9M followed by Motorola at 80.9M and Samsung at 72.2M. Nokia’s share of the market went up to 37.9%. Motorola lost significant ground dropping 3.2% Q/Q to 12.4%. Samsung gained as a result and ascending again to the number 2 spot with a 14.1% marketshare. Sony Ericsson with 9.4% and LG with 7.2% rounded up the top 5. Samsung benefited from its Ultra edition, Sony Ericsson from its Walkman/Cybershot, and LG from high-end Chocolate/Shine models.
    • Despite the sale of over 426M handsets by the top 5 manufacturers, the talk of the industry for 1H07 was the imminent launch of the iPhone. It captivated and mesmerized the media like no other device in history. Despite some limitations, device was an instant hit and a game changer for the industry.
    • 86-88% of the handsets sold in the US are now replacement devices. Globally this figure stands at just over 50%.
    • GSM Association announced the 200 millionth 3G mobile subscription. As estimated in our widely referenced 2005 paper on 3G, 2007 is proving to be the inflection year for many western nations including the US where the penetration crossed 15% in Q2.
    • WiMAX gained headlines with some significant announcements in Q2. Clearwire-Sprint partnership on network expansion slightly reduces the risk for both players. Clearwire increased its subscriber base to 299K with ARPU at $38. Sprint-Google announcement on applications and open APIs was quite telling. FCC’s 700 MHz auction drama kept the lobbyists gainfully employed though its impact on the industry will be marginal.
    • T-Mobile has had good success with its myFaves launch. Since Oct, they have added 2.5M users which add $4/month on average to the plan. If only carriers could extend this interoperability to content.

Iphone wireless reception imporved in latest update

In apple on August 23, 2007 at 7:33 am

Apple has improved its wireless reception in its new relased update version 1.0.2,

“ On the MacRumors Forums, user KLFloyd wrote,

“The first thing different I’ve noticed is that my AirPort reception is far improved. For whatever reason, even when in the same room as my base station I would only get 1-2 bars of AirPort reception. Now I have full reception everywhere in my condo. Not sure if the reception is really any better or if the indicator is fixed.”

User schmulz agreed, “My wifi reception is definitely better. While in my office I have never been able to connect to the wifi hub in the conference room down the hall. After the update I was surprised that the Edge connection seemed faster, until I realized I was connected to the wifi hub with two bars. For me, this is a huge issue, as I was preparing to try to deal with whatever hassle it would take to get the wifi connection extended to my office area. Yes!!!”

Sony Ericsson offers UIQ shares, analyst suggests to open source instead

In uiq accquiring on August 23, 2007 at 6:51 am

Four months after announcing they were acquiring UIQ, Sony Ericsson invited other phone vendors to become shareholders of the Symbian interface (press release), to ensure a strong alternative to the S60 platform for everybody and to improve its financial position. Software, telecom and IT consultant OVUM questions the need of this and suggests an alternative: opening its source. They point to several different advantages that make it sounds like a good advise, but probably so did the advise of opening to investors. There’s no “best” strategy, and we wish Sony Ericsson the best of luck with theirs. After all, by not open sourcing a tiny bit of code nor even basing it’s strategy on third party applications, we all know what Apple is going to achieve with the iPhone and succesive iPhone nano’s, micro’s, etc. Here are some extracts from the article:

It could be perceived that Sony Ericsson is trying to have its cake and eat it, by wanting the strategic advantage of owning its own smartphone platform but at the same time wanting other phone vendors to subsidise it. (…)

    Apple iphone rumours

In apple, iphone on August 23, 2007 at 6:18 am

The Financial Times reports that Apple has chosen some of its European partners for the iPhone: T-Mobile of Germany, Orange of France and O2 in the U.K. have signed contracts with Apple that see them paying Apple 10 percent of the revenues made from the calls and data transfers from iPhones. While none of the carriers would comment on the report, the newspaper’s sources say that the carriers will officially announce their deals with Apple at the IFA trade fair in Berlin at the end of the month. The deal, if true, marks a watershed moment for the carrier/handset maker relationship.

The Financial Times claims that these deals are the first to give handset makers a direct share of revenues from a mobile carrier, which could lead other handset makers to attempt similar deals. But would any other handset maker be able to manage such a deal? As has been noted numerous times, the iPhone enjoyed an unprecedented amount of buzz leading up to its launch as well as a firmly entrenched cousin in the portable music player sector, the iPod. So how could an incumbent handset maker recreate similar conditions warranting such a steep deal with mobile carriers? Seems unlikely

In Best mobiles on August 23, 2007 at 5:15 am

Two new models, the Roomba 530 and Roomba 560, were scheduled to start selling on iRobot’s Web site, Amazon.com and Home Shopping Network on Wednesday for $US250 ($NZ360) and $US399 ($NZ574).

The new models are more durable, have twice as much vacuum power and more sophisticated artificial intelligence technology than previous models.

iRobot has sold 2 million vacuum cleaners since it introduced its first machine almost five years ago.

Improvements include new anti-tangle technology to extract the robots from power cords, sensors that slow them down as they approach walls and beacons that guide them around the house

Cellphone calls in prisons to be blocked

In Cellphone on August 23, 2007 at 5:12 am

The use of blocking technology to combat cellphone use in prisons was a world first, he said.

It was estimated the crackdown would cost the Government around $5 million to implement.

A joint memorandum was signed this morning between the Government, the Corrections Department, Vodafone and Telecom, to work together to combat unauthorised use of cellphones in prisons.

Confiscations of cellphones, which are banned in prisons, have skyrocketed in recent years along with the number of cases of their use to organise crime from behind bars.

The issue came to light again in the past week when it was revealed a Rimutaka Prison inmate used his cellphone to organise the importation of methamphetamine with a street value of $1 million from Thailand. Mr O’Connor said the parties had tested about 30 technological options to find the best way to stamp out cellphone use.

Jamming cellphone transmissions within prison walls was found to be the most effective, but would not suit all prisons.

Where residents were living close to prison walls, and there was a chance their cellphone coverage would be compromised by the blocking technology, other systems would be used.

“Telecom and Vodafone are concerned about the potential effects on legitimate users,” Mr O’Connor said.

Detection devices would instead be used to pick up when a cellphone was being used within a prison

The move seems intended to shore up Yahoo’s mobile moves, which got a big push earlier this year with the launch of its Yahoo Go app and OneSearch search system. In a less general sense, the acquisition of Munich-based Actionality helps position Yahoo as a mobile ad inventory manager, much like its previous deal to provide such services for Vodafone. The company wanted to spend at least $4.6 billion on wireless spectrum if FCC would agree to certain conditions, but late last month, the FCC stopped short of setting ground rules sought by Google that would require winning bidders in auctions for 700 megahertz radio spectrum to resell access to rivals at wholesale rates.

Skype Service outage who is responsible

In Best mobiles on August 21, 2007 at 12:06 pm

SkypeSkype has provided the full explanation as to what happened last week when the service experienced an outage lasting over 36 hours for which they say  there was also an issue with Skype’s software but this wouldn’t have happened if MS provided bug-free software. I love Skype but am disappointed with this final update message.

. They open the explanation with:

On Thursday, 16th August 2007, the Skype peer-to-peer network became unstable and suffered a critical disruption. The disruption was triggered by a massive restart of our users’ computers across the globe within a very short timeframe as they re-booted after receiving a routine set of patches through Windows Update.

The high number of restarts affected Skype’s network resources. This caused a flood of log-in requests, which, combined with the lack of peer-to-peer network resources, prompted a chain reaction that had a critical impact.

Normally Skype’s peer-to-peer network has an inbuilt ability to self-heal, however, this event revealed a previously unseen software bug within the network resource allocation algorithm which prevented the self-healing function from working quickly. Regrettably, as a result of this disruption, Skype was unavailable to the majority of its users for approximately two days.

Are iPhone Apps Junking up the Web?

why can’t iPhone developers just write programs that you could install directly onto the handset? Simple: Apple has yet to cough up a toolkit that would let coders to write software for the iPhone. “In essence,” Gilbertson writes, “Apple has forced a third tier of websites [in addition to standard HTML and WAP] on the world by failing to provide developers with an alternative means of creating applications on the iPhone

On Wired’s Compiler blog, writer Scott Gilbertson likens the recent glut of just-for-iPhone Web sites to a debacle from way back in 1997: sites that were “optimized” for the special, non-HTML-compliant features of Internet Explorer 4, and therefore incompatible with Netscape (IE’s nemesis during the bloody browser wars of the 90’s).

Gilbertson’s post raises other interesting points: for example, why have these iPhone-optimized sites at all, when the iPhone’s Safari browser promised us “the Internet in your pocket”? Yeah, the iPhone is EDGE-only, but the standard HTML Facebook loads almost perfectly (and in less than a minute) on my iPhone—way better (and faster) than it ever would on my 3G-enabled Treo 700p. And Gilbertson points out that most of these iPhone “apps” aren’t really applications at all: “They just offer the same content as the normal sites, just optimized for the iPhone.”

Boing Boing’s Xeni Jardin was on board yesterday’s JFK-to-SFO flight, and reports that the white leather seats were spacious and comfortable (yes, she was in coach), the playful purple-and-pink mood lighting was a welcome change from the fluorescent norm, and that the interior of the plane as a whole was “like a big happy iPod.”

Jardin goes on with a list of 10 reasons why the Virgin Mobile rules; I’ll leave it to you to explore the entire list, but here’s a few of the highlights: two 110-volt power sockets for every three seats in coach (yes!), a pair of wireless access points that’ll have Net connectivity once approved by the FAA, seat-to-seat text chatting, Ethernet and USB ports for every seat, and starting early next year, an EV-DO data uplink for messaging with the ground. Also: a wide range of movies, games (including Doom), and Google Maps on the in-flight entertainment system. Best of all? A round-trip New York-to-San Francisco ticket is just $298.

    GlucoPhone a reality

The GlucoPhone is definitely an interesting contraption since it is capable of sending blood glucose data over the Internet, thanks to a special glucose meter (known as the GlucoPack) that has been fitted onto the back of a cellphone. All you need to do is stick your test strip into a little slot on the side of the phone, bleed into it, and send a text message of your results to an online database. The GlucoPhone currently rides on the Verizon LG5200 handset which isn’t too hot to begin with. Why can’t they release it on something more modern?

Nokia N95 8GB coming to UK before Christmas?

In Best mobiles on August 17, 2007 at 12:39 pm

Black Nokia N95 8GBWow, that would be awesome — at least for citizens of the UK. Other parts of Europe would follow soon, I guess…

Anyway, at this stage we have no official word from the Finish handset manufacturer whether this is true or not — apparently, this information comes from one of the UK networks and somehow it makes sense. After all, the time before Christmas is the best-selling season for most products, handsets included. C’mon Nokia – do it! We all wait for the better version of the N95 with more storage and more RAM. And then, make it available throughout Europe, Asia and the rest of the “GSM world!”

Did Microsoft Update caused problemsi Skype

In Microsoft on August 17, 2007 at 11:39 am

The theory about Microsoft updates causing the Skype problem didn’t mean other operating systems weren’t affected, such as the Mac.

The theory was that a Microsoft update somehow changed the TCP stack or changed how the Microsoft operating system interacted with Skype. Let’s assume the vast majority of Windows users set their patch to auto-install. Then let’s assume Skype is 80-90% Windows users. That means that a lot of Windows users installed the patch last night and lots of Windows supernodes could be knocked offline.

The side effect would be that without enough Windows supernodes, Mac users would be booted as well. Though you’d think the network would be flexible enough to handle millions of Windows users knocked offline.

Again, this was just a theory. It more likely has to do with something Skype is doing on their network.

Skype is experiencing a major outage

In Best mobiles on August 17, 2007 at 10:36 am

Skype is experiencing a major outage. My fellow TMC co-workers noticed it late Wednesday when they couldn’t IM fellow co-workers. TMC’s Dave Rodrqiguez told me that he went home for the day, signed into Skype from home and was bombarded with a ton of Skype IM messages that didn’t go through earlier. I checked Skype’s home page but no mention there. I headed over the the Skype heartbeat page and found that that there are indeed experiencing an outage that is still happening today (Thursday). Skype claims the outage is due to a software issue. Many TMCers are upset they can’t IM their fellow coworkers and their outside clients. Amazing how dependent we’re become on Skype for our business.

    Skype outage
Some users are able to connect to the Skype network but then are quickly disconnected just minutes later. According to Skype, “We expect this to be resolved within 12 to 24 hours.” This has to be the longest Skype outage ever.

    • Am I going to be forced to use terrible horrible no-good AT&T with this phone too? If so, I pass. (If Verizon is involved, then I’m on board.)
    • iPhone is for teens who want to show-off, it doesn’t offer nothing special
    • I phone can be more useful business man for better communication handling their business sitting away from their office. & Just a toy for teenagers playing games while attending classes
    • I’d love to have one, but I will wait until the price comes down
    • ooooo pretty. I think I want this one. Even though I love my iMac and iPod, something turns me off from the iPhone. I wonder which carrier they will partner with
    • I don’t even car about the features, that phone is BEAUTIFUL. I wants.
    • WOAH! I love it! It’s even sexier than the iPhone! I hope it’s not on stupid Cingular/AT&T. If it’s true to the Google spirit, it will be available for all carriers.
    • Is this a confirmed rumor… That Google is making a phone? I’ve heard it debunked a few times. But I would totally love it if they did make one.
    • It’s kinda cute but I’ll stick with my Blackberry Pearl for righ tnow until something better comes along
    • i am a google fan! If they pair with verizon that would be awesome as verizon rocks. I wonder if this is why verizon passed on the iphone? they were alredy in talks with google?

Apple’s Iphone soon to become gaming zone

In apple, iphone, iphone gaming on August 13, 2007 at 1:33 pm

A report in the New York Post today claims that Apple is secretly gearing up to push its iPhone as a gaming platform.

The article cites “various on- and off-the-record sources” as claiming “Apple has been secretly plotting its foray into portable video games for months, looking to add games to its hot iPhone”.

“I was told that a major game developer was seeded with iPhone [technology] quite some time ago,” comments AppleInsider.com’s EIC Kasper Jade.

The NYP also adds: “Apple is expected to make a gaming announcement soon, ‘by Macworld in January at the latest,’ says Engadget.com editorial director Peter Rojas”.

The positioning of iPhone as a mobile games platform, most likely serviced by downloads from iTunes, would put Apple right up against Nokia’s soon-to-be unveiled next-gen N-Gage platform, though the latter will be available across a raft of mass-market handsets as opposed to one with very limited availability.

A games-enabled iPhone would also encroach on territory currently occupied by Sony’s PSP and the Nintendo DS, though again those devices are available in much nigher volumes.

The iPod itself became gaming compliant with a software update in September last year, with Video iPods able to download a selection of games from iTunes. But Apple has kept the portfolio tightly controlled.

Titles from EA, PopCap and Apple itself (many of them casual oriented or remakes of classics like Bejewelled) have been available since launch, with just one or two added to the line-up since, including a new music quiz game Musika from Parappa the Rapper creator Matsuya Matsuura, released last week.

    Dell Buys Zing

In Dell on August 13, 2007 at 12:22 pm

Dell has acquired Zing maker of the Sansa Connect (reviewed by Endgadget). I think this is great news for all of us who while loving Apple products believe that time has come to have some real competition in the music playing arena.

To me (and I know that I am still one of the few people out there who believe this) it is much better to walk around with a Sansa Connect than with an iPod. Why doesn´t the iPod have wifi connectivity is something that I can´t understand. And what´s worse, the iPhone has great WiFi connectivity but it cannot be used to stream or add new music. This is exactly where the Sansa Connect fits in. It is a tiny, elegant device that allows you to discover, share and play music wherever there is WiFi and it even stores new songs for you so when you are outside WiFi coverage you can still have fun. And the Yahoo Music version of the Sansa Connect is a start.

The major software companies including Apple, Microsoft, Adobe, Dell, Symantec, HP, IBM, Intel and McAfee, founded a group called the BSA (Business Software Alliance). They define themselves as “the voice of the world’s commercial software industry and its hardware partners before governments and in the international marketplace”. BSA programs foster technology innovation through education and policy initiatives that promote copyright protection, cyber security, trade, and e-commerce”. In fact, one of their campaigns they run worldwide is to encouraged employees to denounce their companies and employers that use piracy software, such as copies of microsoft, antiviruses and other privative software. and they have become quite succesful in their task in places such as Germany, where quite a few employees contacted them. This is not a problem we have at FON since last May we decided to drop Microsoft and adopt Ubuntu. We did this to save time, maintenance costs, license costs, to be able to use hardware for a longer time, to have access to quick updates, to operate in a secure, virus free environment. But now that I know that Microsoft and others were asking employees to denounce Fon, I feel even happier that we are using open source software.

Google announced a new feature today for their Google News web site that allows people involved in news stories to post dissenting (or concurring) view points next to published news items

Google News is asking people who are in news stories to email them comments about the story, which will be associated with those articles. From the Google News Blog post:

The way this whole crazy thing works is that any person mentioned in a story picked up by Google News can email their comment to news-comments@google.com. The wannabe commenter must use their real name and be able to verify they are, in fact, the person represented in the story (this should be SO fun for Google to figure out!). Once approved, the comment with be attached to the story on an individual story page (!). It’s probably also worth noting that there’s no link involved. There’s not even a nofollowed link, the link just isn’t present at all. If Google thinks this is going to deter comment spam, it’s not. Anybody even remotely mentioned in the story is going to start leaving “valuable” comments just to get themselves a little more search engine love for vanity searches. This is bad, bad, bad.

This help page explains the process more. You email Google telling them your comment, the story you’re commenting on, your contact info and how they can verify your address.

ZOHO so cool in email Attachments, chat wiki, creator

In Best mobiles on August 9, 2007 at 7:50 am

Online office suite Zoho released another product tonight, called Zoho Viewer. It is similar to Scribd (and the upcoming Docstoc) – upload an office or PDF document for easy viewing on Zoho’s website or embedded into other web pages.

Google has its studio of tools, but Zoho is close on Google’s tail. I learned about Zoho from Kathy Schrock’s presentation at NECC 2007, but she only mentioned the Zoho database. Since then Zoho has added a number of applications

Zoho isn’t looking to create a community around documents like Scribd does. All documents are private and you must know the URL to view them. They are not listed in any directory or searcheable. So it is useful primarily to quickly upload email attachments and other documents you want to share with a few people but not the whole world. Viewers can also quickly download the document in its original format.

Zoho Writer - Online Word Processor
    Zoho Sheet – Online Spreadsheet
Zoho Show – Online Presentation tool
Zoho Notebook – Create, Aggregate and Collaborate with multiple types of content online.
Zoho Planner – Online todo list
Zoho CRM - Customer Relationship Management. This looks like a help desk for small businesses. The first 3 lines are free and then it is $12/month for each line after that.
Zoho Creator – Online database (I embedded my first database file below)
    Zoho Wiki – Online Wiki
Zoho Chat – You guessed it – a way to type at each other online.
Zoho Mail – Collaboration groupware. Sounded interesting but it is a beta and I believe that it is all written in the Indian language (Hindi? Tamil?) I look forward to this being developed.
Zoho Meeting – Hold an online meeting. Looked like you can share slideshows, communicate through VOIP, even take control of another person’s computer for troubleshooting.
Zoho Polls - Create surveys and polls.

These are all free. I haven’t had a chance to look at all of them, but it looks promising.

I am embedding a form for completing my database for Web 2.0 Applications below. I copied the HTML code from the Zoho Creator database page and pasted it into the HTML for this page. I have even set it so that I will receive an email notification whenever someone adds a record.

Nokia Add Cellphone Leads in emerging markets

In Cellphone, Nokia on August 7, 2007 at 1:00 pm

The Nokia Corporation reinforced its position as the world’s top cellphone maker in a strong second quarter, reporting an increase in its market share on Thursday amid surging growth in emerging markets. Its earnings beat market expectations, and its stock rose 8 percent.

Net profit for the April-June period rose to 2.82 billion euros ($3.85 billion) from 1.14 billion euros in 2006, the Finnish company said. Sales grew 28 percent, to 12.6 billion euros from 9.8 billion euros.

Nokia sold 100 million mobile devices in the period, an increase of 29 percent over 2006, while the overall industry growth was about 14 percent, with 262 million mobile devices sold globally, Nokia said.

But the group again warned about the performance of its troubled network operations, describing market conditions as challenging because of heavy competition.

“We shall have to increase the amount and speed of cost cutting,” the chief executive, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, said, giving no details.

The greatest growth in Nokia’s handset sales, 37 percent, was in the Middle East and Africa, it said. But at 36 percent growth, sales were also strong in the Asia-Pacific region and in China.

After Iphone its Google phone paving its way

In Google phone, iphone on August 6, 2007 at 11:44 am

Google has been aggressive in developing location based services, has amp-ed up its local search and mapping services. In addition, it has also been mobilizing its applications such as GTalk and GMail. YouTube, the video arm of Google, is beginning to embrace the mobile ecosystem.

The media has been abuzz over the past 24 hours as the Wall Street Journal has reported that Google has begun presenting their phone strategy to carriers. While much of this information is not new, the fact that mass media is covering it, has caused new focus on the initiative. Speculations have been roused once more concerning Google’s foray into the mobile segment as Reuters and The Wall Street Journal last week reported the search engine giant had invested hundreds of millions for a cellphone project.

The WSJ report also said Google has developed prototype phones and talked over technical specifications with manufacturers including LG Electronics.

But Google continued to dodge questions on whether it actually has mobile hardware in the pipeline. In an email response to Reuters, Google said it is “partnering with carriers, manufacturers, and content providers around the world,” but gave no further details. It has said wireless was an increasingly important market but it has not announced plans to build a phone.

Reports of Google’s cellphone venture have been persistent since early this year, but the company had repeatedly declined to make any confirmation.

Nokia Profits going high for Q2

In Nokia on August 3, 2007 at 1:34 pm

Selling 100 million mobile devices, an increase of 29 percent over last year, helped more than double Q2 profits for Nokia (Nasdaq: NOK). Net income was $3.85 billion, a gain of 156.7 percent over last year’s $1.5 billion. Net sales increased about 30 percent to $17 billion, compared with $13 billion in Q206. The AP reported that the company beat the markets expectations, sending shares up 8 percent. Other Q2 highlights included:

Mobile phones: Net sales were flat at $8 billion. The segment’s operating profit grew 28 to $1.7 billion, compared with $1.3 billion

Multimedia: Net sales gained 38.5 percent to $3.6 billion versus last year’s $2.6 billion.

Nokia Siemens Networks: Operating profit was negative $1.5 billion, with an operating margin of -36.8 percent. Earnings release (PDF) | Webcast

Updated: News.com on Nokia’s relative success and how it could make more headway in U.S.: “In the U.S., where at least 220 million people subscribe to cell phone service, Nokia only sells a handful of midrange phones through operators..and some of the company’s high-end phones directly through the Nokia site…But that could change. All the hype surrounding Apple’s iPhone could help draw comparisons to Nokia’s high-end phones. And this interest could help lift sales. If Nokia is able to capitalize on a shift in consumer behavior in the U.S., Motorola may have an even harder time catching up to Nokia.”

    Power failure screws samsung prodcution

In samsung on August 3, 2007 at 1:31 pm

An electrical problem at a Samsung Electronics Co. factory Friday forced a partial halt in production at the world’s largest memory chip maker, the company said, raising prospects of a global shortage.

According to yahoo A spark in an electrical transformer led to a power failure on six chip-making lines at a plant near Seoul, spokeswoman Lee Soo-jeong said. Five of the lines make memory chips and one makes chips for other functions, he said.

Samsung is the world’s largest producer of memory chips for use in computers, digital music players and other devices.

Analysts said the suspension of Samsung’s chip lines could lead to a severe shortage of NAND flash memory chips, which are able to retain data even when they are unpowered. Samsung’s misfortune could give a boost to its South Korean rival Hynix Semiconductor Inc. and Japan’s Toshiba Corp

    VoIP Vandals

In VoIP on August 3, 2007 at 12:32 pm

Internet telephone services like Skype and Vonage are starting to look less like digital gimmicks and more like the next generation of voice communication. They’re cheaper than traditional phone services and increasingly fast and reliable. But they may also be far more hackable.

In a series of presentations, Security professionals at the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas they demonstrated ways in which cybercriminals can eavesdrop on VoIP calls, steal data from Internet telephony devices, intercept credit card numbers from VoIP connections and shut connections down altogether.

Peter Thermos, chief technology officer of Palindrome Technologies, proved the point onstage: He played snippets of conversations recorded by snooping on VoIP calls, exploiting vulnerability in a common element in VoIP communications known as media gateway control protocol.

“Using this weakness in MGCP, you can do anything like reroute or tear down connections,” He said. “But eavesdropping is especially scary.”

Thermos also described an exploitable hole in ZRTP, one species of the VoIP language real-time transfer protocol: ZRTP encrypts all transmitted sounds, but not the numbers translated from tones. That means hackers can listen for credit card information communicated from touchtone phones.

Though the attacks on display were new, VoIP isn’t: Internet telephony has existed since the early ’90s. But Dempster says its increasing adoption hasn’t led to the patching of old bugs. In his presentation, he described how Asterisk, an open-source VoIP application, can be attacked using what he said was an “extremely basic” method known as a buffer overflow. “We point these problems out,” he said, “But the lessons aren’t being taken.”

New mobile devices are also drawing attention to VoIP problems. Krishna Kurapati, founder and chief technology officer of Sipera Systems, demonstrated vulnerabilities of several Wi-Fi devices at Wednesday’s presentations, crashing a Blackberry and a D-Link phone onstage by hacking their wireless Internet connections. He also simulated the theft of private data via VoIP from a laptop.

    FeedBurner Self-Service Advertising

In Best mobiles on August 3, 2007 at 11:56 am

FeedBurnerOne of my fears when Google acquired FeedBurner is that the excellent CPMs and advertisers that FB has in their ad network would be replaced by Google’s “we ain’t tellin’” AdSense network. While I still believe that will happen by year’s end, the longer it takes, the more I am happy. Another great part about the HA program is that it should increase FB’s fill rate which was about 35-40%.

Yesterday I wrote about the new FeedBurner self-service advertising option using their headline animator service. I think it’s an excellent mechanism for smaller sites like CN to get visibility on other sites.

So the service is live 24 hours, and already I have four ad insertion orders! Here they are:

Centernetwork reports One thing I notice is that the CPM is noted but not the total purchase. Would be good for a publisher to know how much the person has purchased. Based on what I can tell, two of them purchased $25, one $50 and one $100 for a total of $200. After FB takes their cut (at least they share it!), I should net $130. Nice. Cable bill paid this month!

I will continue to update as the month progresses. If you are in the FeedBurner Ad Network, report in on how it’s working for you. And if you are an advertiser, let us know how it is working out from your end as well.
