Nokia Ovi is shaping up for a fight with Google

Nokia’s multimedia supremo Anssi Vanoki showed off the company’s new Ovi service at Nokia World today, demonstrating how it’ll work on PCs, online and on mobile handsets. My takeaway thought is this: everyone bangs on about Nokia taking on Apple and its iPhone, but with Ovi, Nokia seems to be setting its sights at Google.

I mean that in its web form, Ovi is trying to bring together a bunch of different applications, including communication and content, while also rolling it out on mobile phones. Just what Google is doing with its web apps, in other words.

Also interesting is Nokia’s bullishness today – for example, one Vanjoki slide had a bunch of Nokia Nseries phones in, but also an iPhone, a Sony Ericsson Walkman, and a BlackBerry. It might seem like a small point, but last

China’s smartphone sales pegged at 52 percent

In News on December 3, 2007 at 6:43 am

CCID Consulting has released figures showing how China’s smartphone sales changed from the second quarter to third quarter of 2007. Windows Mobile’s growth rate, pegged at 52 percent, outpaced the overall rate by a factor of 10, the Beijing-based market research firm reports.

CCID says the sales volume of China’s smartphones reached nearly 6.4 million devices in 2007 Q3, up 5.2 percent over 2007 Q2. Sales revenue reached 16.61 billion yuan, increasing 11.3 percent on a month-on-month basis. The firm ascribes this to students buying phones during the summer vacation and to promotions during the Chinese national holiday.

Chinese smartphone operating system market share, Q3 2007
Source: CCID Consulting
According to CCID, Symbian OS retained its large lead over other operating systems, thanks to continuing popularity of Nokia’s phones in China. Symbian held nearly 70 percent market share, with sales volumes reaching 4.416 million handsets.

Though still representing just over 5 percent of the market, Windows Mobile posted a sequential growth rate of 52 percent, CCID noted. This was attributed in part to the popularity of Windows Mobile-based phones from Motorola, Samsung, Lenovo and Dopod (HTC).

What Does android means to google

In android, google on November 28, 2007 at 10:57 am

The best answer that i think would be that google is upto some thing that solves problems for developer and manufacturer Google has never been into manufacturing hardware. They are an ad revenue based company, and they have been looking for ways to bring their advertising model to the mobile phone industry. What better way to do this than to break from the pack and develop your own mobile platform. Also  As of this writing Google has stated it has no intentions of releasing hardware of any kind to compete against the Iphone. Instead it is focusing it’s efforts on Android, a new open source platform for mobile phones

All applications are created equal
Android does not differentiate between the phone’s core applications and third-party applications. They can all be built to have equal access to a phone’s capabilities providing users with a broad spectrum of applications and services. With devices built on the Android Platform, users will be able to fully tailor the phone to their interests. They can swap out the phone’s homescreen, the style of the dialer, or any of the applications. They can even instruct their phones to use their favorite photo viewing application to handle the viewing of all photos.

Breaking down application boundaries
Android breaks down the barriers to building new and innovative applications. For example, a developer can combine information from the web with data on an individual’s mobile phone — such as the user’s contacts, calendar, or geographic location — to provide a more relevant user experience. With Android, a developer could build an application that enables users to view the location of their friends and be alerted when they are in the vicinity giving them a chance to connect.

TAG Heuer release its own mobile phone

In Entertainment on November 27, 2007 at 10:54 am

If Prada, Armani, Levi’s and Diesel can do it – why wouldn’t TAG Heuer release its own mobile phone as well. Yap, they’re going to…
According to Reuters the famous Swiss watchmaker, part of French luxury goods group LVMH, is working alongside Modelabs (the folks behind Levi’s phone design) to release “a series of luxury mobile phones.” Heard that — not one device but a “series.”
Apparently, TAG fans will have to wait for the second half of next year, when we may see such TAG celebrities as Kimi Raikkonen, Brad Pitt and Tiger Woods suddenly start using new cellphones. Hopefully, we’ll actually see at least a single powerful phone (i.e. smartphone) in the whole series. In the meantime, we can still hope it’s the Rolex that will combine both the beauty AND the features

Two Companies Interested In Singapore’s Mobile TV Licenses

In News on November 27, 2007 at 10:44 am

Two companies have already expressed an interest in the mobile TV licenses Singapore’s Media Development Authority yesterday announced it would handout for the second half of 2008: “PGK Media says it wants to launch a ‘TV2Go’ service as soon as it receives a licence, supplying 10-15 channels. Innoxious Technologies says it will supply eight channels, targeting 15-35 year-olds” reports Rapid TVNews. The MDA plans to adopt a technology neutral position and is “proposing to give operators the flexibility to deploy a standard that best suits their business case” (release). Singapore has a population of 4.5 million, but more than 100 percent mobile penetration—and there’s not much area to cover either.

IS Google Android a threat to Microsoft

In Google phone, android on November 27, 2007 at 9:26 am

According to Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence, a consulting  and research firm, the new mobile OS is based on Linux and contains a Web browser, video player, instant-messaging  application, and several other features.

Google’s Android OS is the outgrowth of a mobile software project started three years ago by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Andy Rubin. His company, Android, was acquired by Google in August 2005 for an undisclosed amount in a move that was widely seen as the opening play of Google’s wireless  plans

What makes the OHA so impressive,” Sterling said, “is that Google has convinced so many companies that it is in their interest to participate, despite their fears of Google’s size and resources. They’ve made the case that if the mobile industry is accelerated as a whole, a lot of different companies are in a position to benefit, and not just Google, where as Microsoft has particular reason to be concerned about the release of Android, Sterling pointed out, because it is a direct competitor to the company’s Windows Mobile. Sterling said that he expects that companies such as Nokia and even Microsoft ultimately will join the alliance, particularly if consumers react favorably to Android.

Why Google bought Jaiku

In google, jaiku on November 26, 2007 at 10:45 am

According to venturebeat Speaking of cool Finnish companies getting sucked by Silicon Valley, you’ll recall the Jaiku was recently bought by Google. Jaiku is like Twitter, in that it lets people post short messages about what they are doing. So why did Google chose Jaiku, instead of the homegrown San Francisco company, Twitter. Jonathan Mulholland says its because Jaiku offers location awareness, and that this fits in with its designs for its Android platform:

…when posting status updates Jaiku has the ability to capture and share the location information (neighbourhood, city, country) of the poster in real time. So in addition to a message post Jaiku can provide real time location awareness of users… And how does Jaiku do this? An integral part of the service is a client application for Symbian S60 platform mobile phones. The client uses location APIs within S60 devices to triangulate the handset (and the users) location based on nearby cellular network towers. The Jaiku client was in fact originally conceived as a ’status aware address book’, and as such integrates into compatible S60 phones to the extent that it also shares the phones (and again the users) status availability (General, In Meeting, Outdoor etc). So in addition to a message post AND location awareness you also have deep mobile integration sufficient to identify the status of a user as well…Jaiku potentially gives Google the Holy Grail – time relevant, location based targeting of information, personalised to a very high degree. Google + Jaiku is not a million miles away from being able to push appropriate advertising to individuals based on their profile, their location and their availability.

call any long distance landline or mobile phone by just dialing a local number,

In internet on November 22, 2007 at 7:34 am

internet phone calls Internet phone calls (VoIP), that you make from the computer to other landline or mobile phone numbers using software like Skype, are generally cheaper but then they require a computer and an Internet connection.

Jajah earlier made some good start and allowed users to make long distance phone calls over the Internet using regular phone lines – a computer was required only for arranging the call – the actual voice conversation would happen over traditional phone lines.

Now they have gone a step further with Jajah Direct that completely eliminates the need for a computer to make internet phone calls.

With Jajah Direct, you can call any long distance landline or mobile phone by just dialing a local number, then enter the number you want to call and Jajah connects you. And since it’s a VoIP call, the calling rates remain low.

And unlike the Skype phones, you require no special hardware to use Jajah Direct – it works with every phone that has a dialpad.

Jajah Direct is currently available only in US, UK and Israel but Shaherose (of Jajah) did confirm that they will offer this service in India soon.

BSNL’s Big $750 MM WiMAX Network Plan

In News on November 22, 2007 at 5:51 am

Wireless technologies seem to work well in India vs. wired broadband, which is popular in other fast-growing telecom markets such as China. Maybe it is easier and faster to roll out wireless infrastructure and start making money.

Indian incumbent BSNL plans to spend about $750 million on a nationwide WiMAX network that will primarily target rural areas and small towns and cover a sixth of the country’s ever-growing population. This has to be one of the largest WiMAX rollouts anywhere on the planet. The funds for the first phase of deployment are coming from a universal service fund set up for broadband access. BSNL will roll out the WiMAX network in large cities later as a separate buildout. The initial network will connect schools and telephony kiosks in villages.

The state-owned incumbent that is often the target of choice four-letter words because of dropped calls to my parents in Delhi has been dabbling with WiMAX for a while now. The announcement comes close on the heels of the Indian government clarifying its 3G policies.

Japanese phones offer earthquake warnings and automatic translation.

– A novel feature that could be life-saving, Area Mail, provides quick emergency reports delivered to mobile phones in a specific area, with dedicated ringtones and messages used to alert the user to an impending emergency.

Shabette Hon-yaku, is a Japanese-English (and vice versa) voice translation service. Simply speak into the phone in Japanese, and the phone will speak back in English – or vice versa, if preferred.

The interesting thing about this service is that the translation occurs on the server, not the mobile phone, meaning that the service is free to improve in time without the need to upgrade the handsets.

Nebulus to help save lives

In internet on November 19, 2007 at 9:57 am

The Nebulus Emergency Flotation Device is a self-inflating shell which deploys quickly, enabling a water or ice rescue to be performed by just a single person without waiting having to wait for back up. In such emergencies, timing is everything and every single second of waiting could mean the clock ticking even closer to death’s door. The Nebulus looks pretty much like an ordinary life rae, and can be manually inflated by an emergency first responder or the rider when the recreation vehicle breaks through ice. It utilizes a couple of pressurized carbon dioxide (CO2) bottles to inflate an enclosed lift bag. Whenever the rip-cord is pulled, the Nebulus’ inflated lift bag can carry up to 1,000-pounds of the submerged vehicle and riders.

Iphone to be sale in China interesting statistics

In apple, iphone on November 19, 2007 at 7:06 am

China Mobile’s pending negotiation with Apple on iPhone sales, China Unicom China’s second largest mobile operator showed its interest in introducing iPhone into China, reports Xinhua news agency

Localmobilesearch has  an interesting analysis of the financial implications for Apple from Silicon Alley Insider:

We estimate that a 2% share of China’s 600 million mobile subscribers (projected 2008) with a $300 unit price tag and no revenue share would yield $1.8 billion in incremental annual revenue. (For comparison, after only three months of iPhone sales, Apple already has a 1/2% share of the U.S. market). A 5% share at the same price would produce $4.5 billion in annual revenue.

China Mobile is reportedly in talks to sell the iPhone in that market. China is the world’s single largest mobile handset market, with some 500+ million mobile users.

How to crash a Windows mobile using MMS

In Entertainment on November 17, 2007 at 6:52 am

Security researchers have released proof-of-concept code that exploits vulnerabilities in MMS implementations in mobile phones running mobile versions of Windows.

The vulnerability was discovered six months ago by security researcher Collin Mulliner, who published the exploit at the Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin last week in a bid to force manufacturers to deal with the issue. document.write(’\x3Cscript src=”http://ad.uk.doubleclick.net/adj/reg.security.4159/antivirus;’+RegExCats+GetVCs()+’pid=’+RegId+’;'+RegKW+’maid=’+maid+’;test=’+test+’;pf=’+RegPF+’;dcove=d;sz=336×280;tile=3;ord=’ + rand + ‘?” type=”text/javascript”>\x3C\/script>’); dcmaxversion = 9 dcminversion = 6 Do On Error Resume Next plugin = (IsObject(CreateObject(”ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.” & dcmaxversion & “”))) If plugin = true Then Exit Do dcmaxversion = dcmaxversion – 1 Loop While dcmaxversion >= dcminversion

The flaw involves buffer overflow vulnerabilities in the SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) protocol in MMS messages. As a result long MMS messages appended with malware may crash phones in such a way as to deposit hostile code in the memory of targeted devices. The IPAQ 6315 and i-mate PDA2k are confirmed as vulnerable but other devices running Pocket PC 2003 and Windows Smartphone 2003 are also likely to be at risk of attack using the technique.

Even in devices confirmed as vulnerable the attacker needs to know the correct memory slot where the MMS processing code is executing, so exploitation is far from easy. Malicious MMS message will most likely only crash a device rather than infecting it, reports anti-virus firm F-Secure.

“While [this] is very significant, it does not pose an immediate danger to any large group of users. Although it is possible to create an MMS worm or other malware that uses the vulnerability, this particular exploit cannot be directly used in creating malware,” Jarno Niemela, a researcher at F-Secure’s Labs, writes

How to run 2 Skype accounts on the same computer

In Skype on November 16, 2007 at 7:50 am

I was trying to use skype with tw credential a t the same time and i found this great way to do it.

First, Create a new Windows user by going to the Control Panel and Clicking on “User Accounts”. Choose “Create a new account” and follow the steps to set permissions.

Skype  also suggest setting a password for the new user by clicking on the newly created User and choosing the Set Password option.
The new user will also require admin rights on your PC.

Next, create a shortcut to Skype or make a copy of the Shortcut that is already in the start menu. Right click this new shortcut and choose properties. On the bottom of the first page will be a button labeled “Advanced…”. Click this button and select “Run with different credentials”. Select OK, and then select OK again to close the Properties dialog.

You’re all set. Whenever you use this new shortcut it will ask for a Windows username and password. Enter the username and password of the user you created earlier by choosing “The following user:” option. Click OK and you’ll have a second instance of Skype. It will require that you log in with your Skype username and password the first time.

To help automate the ‘run as’ trick you can create a second desktop icon for Skype and modify its properties. Click the advanced button and check the box ‘run with different credentials’. After clicking on the modified icon it will ask you to sign in as another user. Changing the icon graphic also helps ensures you click on the correct icon.

If you have multiple USB headsets or USB Phones you should be able to setup both instances of Skype to use a different sound device

Apple Trying Hard In Europe

In apple, iphone on November 14, 2007 at 12:59 pm

Moconews Apple and its partners in the mobile telephony business are having a hard time stopping them. Ever since its launch in the US back in June, the iPhone has been subjected to all sorts of hacks and tricks by a growing community of keen . “It is being much more proactive than in the U.S., where it took a groundswell of unhappy iPhone owners to build before Apple took steps to ease their concerns…”They certainly have learned their lesson, and are being more proactive,” said Chris Fletcher, a mobility research director with AMR Research. “Europe is going to be a much tougher market” reports the Wall Street Journal. One of the bigger issues was the connection speed, which Apple has tackled by getting agreements with hotspot providers in the UK and Germany so people can use the iPhone in the hotspots free of charge. The WSJ also mentions T-Mobile’s unlimited data plan, which has received criticism for being shaped down to a lower speed when people use too much data.

Steve Ballmer at the Microsoft VC Summit 2006

In Money on November 8, 2007 at 9:01 am

Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer says that Google wasn’t ahead of Microsoft in any way online except with search. Is that true. Here are a few more tidbits he covered:

  • VC investment levels up – including in early stage since 2005, with resource shortages in certain places (especially where Google has a development center)
  • Consolidation in the industry is happening, with M&A being the primary exit option
  • Consumer markets are driving enterprise expectations, as applications and services available in the cloud to consumers lead to enterprise demands
  • Open source is leading in the enterprise through pragmatism: it is about value delivered, reliability and cost savings. There is still an issue of IP protection, and what will happen when a company selling open source software is sued for a patent infringement.
  • Service oriented software is very difficult to balance between extensibility/customization that you get inside the firewall, and the cost savings that you get through a standard platform in the cloud.
  • 200605111634_00248Venture investment correlates to Microsoft’s business (per the blurry picture on the right that shows that mapping)
  • Phones are going from dumb to smart
  • Web 2.0  = Intelligence in all devices, and communication between all devices.
  • Still a lot of issues with open source companies, or companies relying on open source stacks that they modify without paying a lot of attention to contribution obligations related to the license.
  • Innovation investments targeted by Microsoft:
    • Windows: The Live Software Ecosystem
    • Software Development: Up a Semantic Level  – as opposed to using low level declarative programming
    • Delegating IT
    • In Control: Professionally and Personally
    • Rewiring the Economy: moving away from paperwork through enterprise and extrarprise workflows
    • Redefining Personal Entertainment & Creativity

Following the presentation, a brief Q&A took place with the audience:

  • On the issue of speed of execution and delivery vs. Google (“unnamed company down the road”), Ballmer states that companies can’t deliver fundamental innovation in 6 months chunks and with loose coordination. At the same time, he jokes about Microsoft’s tendencies of having super long sales cycles on products and services.
  • On the Microsoft stock: “I would not sell now baby” :-) .
  • How does Microsoft set the price on technology acquisitions, since they seem to value business less than technology ?
That valuation is often based on what it is worth Microsoft to have, as opposed to pure financial metrics, etc.
  • What can VCs invest in if Google or Microsoft end up building all major pieces of Internet services by themselves ?
Microsoft will be happy to work with VCs to indicate what is strategic, especially as Microsoft builds a competitive monetization platform to AdSense, and they will go at it with “whatever it takes, for however long it takes”.
  • Which deal/acquisition do you wish you had done ?
Steve wishes he had gone ahead with the SAP acquisition/merger – but does not go through the reasons why.
  • Can you comment on the spin-out of Wallop from Microsoft, and SNs in general.
Social Networks are interesting, and important, but it is not clear which ones will survive in the long run ? Microsoft will deliver SN functionality in their products for the enterprise, but Ballmer does not seem that excited about owning one of these sites.
  • What is the solution to avoid the proliferation of malware ?
Windows Vista, which has anti-virus/malware protection at its core. Less than 50% of PCs have a form of anti-malware enabled.

Google has announced a number of changes to its key Adwords

In internet on November 8, 2007 at 8:42 am

Google has announced a number of changes to its key Adwords product that will provide a more rounded product offering to Adwords’ advertisers.

Google has tweaked its site targeting feature to give advertisers the ability to run their campaigns not only on the front page of sites, but also on specific pages on each site. The feature now has a new (and appropriate) name: placement targeting.

Advertisers can also now choose the bidding option “that best matches their needs.” Users can now pick between CPM or CPC advertising with placement targeting dependent on the overall goals of each campaign.

Neither change is revolutionary, but it is another step in the evolution of Adwords from its strict CPC one size fits all package to a service that provides a full gauntlet of options to advertisers. Not that Google really has to do much to attract new advertisers, given their dominance of online advertising, but it’s nice to know they are still evolving and listening to customer requests.

China produces one half of the world’s mobile phones

In MobilePhone on November 2, 2007 at 11:02 am

Mobilemonday reports that China’s mobile phone output reach 500 million to 600 million sets this year. This is about one half of the global handset market. The production estimate comes from Xu Qin, an official with the National Development and Reform Commission, quoted by a Xinhua news.

China’s parts suppliers, however, are growing quickly as they sell to China’s electronics market which is experiencing stellar growth. According to Peter Kong, president of Arrow Asia Pac, a unit of Arrow Electronics Inc. in Melville, N.Y., China’s gross domestic product (GDP) is growing at 10 percent per year. “If you take the GDP growth of the first half of 2006, it has already far overtaken that of North America, Europe and Japan,” says Kong. Chinese component manufacturers come in many flavors. Some are indigenous suppliers that sell their products locally and export some to Europe and North America. Others are multinational manufacturers with facilities in China. They also export and sell locally. Still others are multinational manufacturers that have set up plants in China specifically to satisfy their customers in China.

iPhone contains hazardous chemicals

In apple, iphone on November 1, 2007 at 1:04 pm

According to alleyinsider International — Scientific tests, arranged by Greenpeace, reveal that Apple’s iPhone contains hazardous chemicals. The tests uncovered two types of hazardous substances, some of which have already been eliminated by other mobile phone makers…

In May, due to our successful Green my Apple campaign Steve Jobs, the boss of Apple, claimed: “Apple is ahead of, or will soon be ahead of, most of its competitors” on environmental issues.

We watched closely when the iPhone was launched in June for any mention of the green features of the phone from Apple. There was none.

So we bought a new iPhone in June and sent it our Research Laboratories in the UK. Analysis revealed that the iPhone contains toxic brominated compounds (indicating the prescence of brominated flame retardants (BFRs)) and hazardous PVC. The findings are detailed in the report, “Missed call: the iPhone’s hazardous chemicals

There have been thousands of media articles about the iPhone. Few of them have discussed the phone’s environmental credentials. Check out our video of the disassembly of the iPhone and what the tests revealed:

leaked Google phone Photo

In internet on November 1, 2007 at 11:09 am

We’ve seen a lot of Google Phone concepts in our day, but it’s really hard to determine which — if any — are for real. Here is the latest leaked photo of what may be the first official Google gPhone, but without any sort of confirmation from the search engine giant, we can’t say just how official this product shot really is.

A while back, we heard that HTC would be the firm that would actually manufacture the Google Phone, but what we see here is actually a handset from e28, a Chinese third-tier manufacturer. That’s strike one. Strike two comes from the fact that this phone isn’t terribly attractive or daunting in its design, and we’d imagine that Google would want something pretty for their freshman dance.

And then, we’ve got to wonder if this is the hardware heading to either Sprint-Nextel or Verizon, as reported by the Wall Street Journal earlier today.

AdBrite to serve ads for facebook

Internet advertising marketplace AdBrite has announced a new ad program, tailored to the needs of Facebook application developers, who can now use a new web-based interface to join AdBrite’s ad inventory.

AdBrite co-founder Philip Kaplan claims that the demand from the Facebook application developers was already there, and that it was a logical move for the company. Popular Facebook applications like iLike, Zombies and Pirates already display AdBrite ads.

While the rights to display ads on Facebook itself are held by Microsoft, Facebook third party apps are there for the taking. the Facebook platform has been a huge success, and Facebook applications are already cashing in serious money for developers around the world, so AdBrite has done well to jump on the bandwagon before the competition does.

Google is not coming out with a Googlephone

In Google phone, google on October 30, 2007 at 9:52 am

What part of 'No Googlephone' didn't you understand?

According to valleymag Google is not coming out with a Googlephone. But the idea is clearly so entrancing that tech reporters keep returning to it, as in a new Wall Street Journal article. The short version: Google will announce plans that, instead of involving its own models of cell phones, will work with existing carriers and handset makers. It’s a big comedown for Google’s wireless engineers, who have, it seems, wasted as much as $100 million Google cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin staked on the failed Googlephone project. But as a piece of corporate jujitsu, the Googlephone may still pay off brilliantly. The mere threat of a Googlephone may have been enough to corral some wireless carriers into its camp. And the most intriguing element? Google’s wireless software efforts will pull in existing mobile versions of Gmail and YouTube, among other Google services. But that’s not the key part, as my colleague Gizmodo editor Brian Lam has speculated. No, instead, Google’s hoping to establish a software platform that’s open to third-party developers. And that may be the trickiest part to sell. Wireless carriers are famous for restricting what software can run over their networks. That they would crown Google as the new kingmaker seems unlikely. About as unlikely, in fact, as a Googlephone

Nokia and Samsung makes 54% of the mobile phone market

Global mobile phone shipments grew a modest 12 percent year-over-year, to reach 285 million units in Q3 2007. Samsung and Nokia were the star performers while Motorola stayed on its down curve. “Total global cell phone shipments remain relatively sluggish, at just 12 percent annual growth, but Samsung and Nokia continue to surge ahead. Samsung is the fastest-growing top-five brand, with 47 percent annual shipment growth. Meanwhile, Nokia has easily the highest operating margin among all megavendors, with a 22 percent rate in its handset division,” commented Neil Mawston, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics.“The rise of Samsung and Nokia is coming partly at the expense of Sony Ericsson and Motorola. Samsung is rapidly picking up share in 3G feature phones, where Sony Ericsson has seen much recent success, while Nokia continues to outsell Motorola in the entry-tier GSM segment of emerging markets,” said Bonny Joy, Analyst at Strategy Analytics.

Holiday season to attract highest sales in 2007

In Gossips, Nikon on October 29, 2007 at 7:53 am

Many analyst believes that highest this holiday season would attarct highests sales in comparison to last 2 years as companies have started focussing on this part of years as most highly selling index.

The holiday shopping season is almost upon us. Many online retailers are still trying to get everything ready for the anticipated hordes of shoppers who will be beating down their online gates to buy gifts for their loved ones and friends.

Most retail sectors depend heavily — and some, almost exclusively — on December sales  to make their yearly numbers. In fact, many online retailers will do more business  in the last 12 days before Christmas than the rest of the year combined.

Online shopping has become a part of the holidays themselves, with 24 percent more unique visitors to

the Index on Thanksgiving and 29 percent more on Christmas day than last year. Many people are taking

advantage of their holiday time off to go online and shop while brick and mortar stores are closed, which

means online shopping may soon take its place among the American holiday traditions of eating and

spending time with friends and family.

Biggest Holiday Online Shopping Day

The biggest online shopping day of the holiday season was December 12th with 30.4 million unique

visitors to the eShopping Holiday Index. On that day, eBay led the top shopping destinations with a

unique audience of 12.4 million, followed by Amazon with 6.1 million unique visitors, and Wal-mart.com

with 4.0 million (see Table 1).

As managing director, Paul Yates, comments, complacency can be the biggest enemy of any on-line business. He explains: “While Christmas may only just be over, effective SEO involves a lot of research, careful implementation and patience. It can take a long time for search engines to spider and index a site, so many well run businesses are already optimising their sites ready for next Christmas.”

Rrestaurant servers stealing their way to higher tips on credit card receipts

In News on October 25, 2007 at 11:16 am

According tu Punny There’s a fascinating yet frightening discussion over at the FatWallet Finance Forums about restaurant servers stealing their way to higher tips on credit card receipts. Servers upset by low tips that they probably deserved have been known to edit the tip line of credit card receipts to bump up their tip. For example:

changing a dollar tip to an 8 dollar tip is easy for crooked waiters

See how easily a measly tip is changed to a generous one by a disgruntled server or bartender?

The easiest way to combat this illegal and downright nasty behavior is to reconcile your receipts against your credit card statements each and every month. You’ll spot restaurant wrongdoing and be able to phone it in to your credit card issuer faster than you can say “there’s a fly in my soup.”

But for the trillions of people who don’t want to go through the trouble of reconciling their receipts each month, there’s an easier way to stop tip alterations just by glancing over your credit card statement each month. It involves using checksums to add a layer of security to your tip amount. The term “checksum” normally refers to a technique used by computer systems to ensure file integrity. Here, we’ll be using checksums to ensure human integrity.

There are many checksum systems you can use when tipping, but here’s a great example that’s easy to learn and can be performed without the aid of a calculator unless you suck at math really badly.

Step 1: Look over your receipt

You’ll get ripped off far more often for food and drink overcharges than you will by spiteful servers. Check each billed item and compare it to the menu price.

Step 2: Calculate the appropriate tip

Tip as you normally do without worrying about checksums for now. For our example, let’s say you had the following bill but service was slow, so you’d like to tip about 10%.

subtotal 47.16 plus tip 4.71 total 51.87

Step 3: Apply a checksum

That $4.71 is just begging to have ten dollars added to it, and $51.87 becomes $61.87 so easily. Foil these alteration efforts with this simple checksum method.

Adjust the amount of the tip so that the numbers in the final total to the left of the decimal point add up to the right-most digit. In this case, the total has a “51″ to the left of the decimal point (A). 5 + 1 = 6, so the final digit should be six. Adjust the total to $51.86 or $51.96 (B) by adding nine or subtracting one from the tip (C).

5 plus 1 equals 6, change the total to 51.86, change the tip to 4.70 to match

Step 4: Check your credit card statements each month

While the receipt will help you ensure no fraud was enacted upon your dining bill, you only need the statement to verify the checksum. For this example, simply locate the dining transaction, add the numbers to the left of the decimal point, and confirm that they add up to the right-most digit. If they don’t, you’ve been scammed.

credit card statement showing thieving server has struck your bill

This technique is not foolproof. If the scammy server had added nine dollars to the total—making it $60.86—the checksum calculation would still come back okay. But because it’s harder to turn a “51″ into a “60″ than a “61,” it’s unlikely your server will do this unless they’re wise to this particular checksum technique.

Step 5: Deal with the theft

If you hit a checksum that fails, dig out your copy of the receipt to confirm it doesn’t match the total on your statement. Next, do three things:

  1. Call your credit card issuer. It should be fairly simple to get a credit for the difference between your actual bill and what you were forced to pay due to this fraud.
  2. Call the police. You were the victim of a crime, so you should report it, even if it’s just a few dollars. If the stealing server has multiple victims who report his or her behavior, the police will likely take action against the server and/or the restaurant. Hopefully a few thieving restaurant workers behind bars will set enough of an example to discourage similar actions in others.
  3. Call the restaurant (optional). At this point, you’ve likely got your money back and given all the information you can to law enforcement. You can try calling the restaurant to report the theft, but it might not do much. In the best case, the manager will recognize the server’s name on your receipt and confirm he or she has been suspected of wrongdoing. Maybe you’ll even get a free meal out of it for your trouble. Worst case, the restaurant does nothing.

The original poster in the FatWallet Finance Forum topic may be onto something when he or she says that this is probably one of the most widespread types of theft that goes unpunished. Now you have the tools to fight it. The next time you’re at a restaurant, eat, drink, be merry, and do a little extra math come tip time to help combat this rapidly growing problem.

Nokia Still Leads Worldwide Cell Phone Market

In News on October 25, 2007 at 11:13 am

cell3.JPGAccording to iSuppli, Nokia is still outselling its competitors in the mobile-phone handset market by more than two to one, and the company’s market share increased from the second quarter.

The analyst firm said that Samsung remains Nokia’s closest competitor. Nokia, however, controls 39.5 percent share of the market, while Samsung shipped only 15.1 percent of those phones sold during the third quarter. Motorola, Sony, and LG rounded out the top five, although iSuppli cautioned that Motorola’s market share estimate should be considered preliminary until Motorola reports its earnings later on Thursday morning.

As usual, the only market Nokia has had difficulty in is North America. iSuppli analyst Tina Teng said in an email that the third-quarter sales figures for the North American market were not available yet. Through the end of 2006, Nokia had roughly 15 percent of the North American market, placing it fourth behind Motorola, with a market share of 40 percent. LG and Samsung almost tied for second and third, respectively, she said.

Tired of Facebook? Try Hatebook

In Entertainment on October 25, 2007 at 10:17 am

Here is your time to say and say hello to Hatebook. Hatebook is a Facebook parody site that looks and functions exactly like Facebook… except with an evil twist. Here’s a brief list of the “evil twist” to give you a better idea of how Hatebook compares to Facebook:

  • if you want to mail message someone on Hatebook, it’s called “junkmail”
  • instead of a blue color scheme, Hatebook is an evil red
  • profiles (called “hate profiles”) include a section called “Why I’m Better Than You!”
  • “Hate Albums” consist of photos and descriptions of things you hate
  • Are you married? Single? Hatebook doesn’t care. Your status options consist of Hater, Player, Sucker, Loser, etc.

After we created a profile, we were greeted with the following message:

“Hello Sucker methodshop! Welcome to Hatebook! Your registration to the Evil Empire was successful. Feel free to pimp your hate profile.”

Also, you are suppose to enter in the wrong mailing address to hide from your enemies. I just used our P.O. Box. I don’t really mind if someone hates that. I don’t really like it myself.

But why just parody Facebook when you can improve it? The German creators of Hatebook have not only recreated Facebook’s functionality, they have also improved it. For example, they’ve integrated Google Maps into Hatebook (Evil Maps) so you can locate people you hate on a map.

Does everybody love to hate? Even advertisers? Time will tell. In the meantime feel free to hate MethodShop.com here: http://hatebook.org/user/methodshop

New Japan carrier enter wireless market

In Technology on October 25, 2007 at 5:56 am

Today sees a new carrier enter Japan’s gorillapolistic cellphone market; eMobile, the cellular subsidiary of ADSL infrastructure company eAccess, is sliding in with a data-only HSDPA service that’ll start this March and grow a voice element in 2008.For the moment, they’re offering one standalone Windows Mobile 5 gadget, the Sharp EM ONE, which looks to be a remix of the WinMob units Sharp’s provided to Willcom thus far; it sports Bluetooth 1.2, 802.11b/g, OneSeg digital TV support, a 4.1-inch wide-VGA screen, and a “dual-slider” keyboard that can expose either the full QWERTY goods HTC-style or simply a directional/enter key, as desired. It will support voice calls once the network does, and it looks like Skype can fill in some of the gap for the meantime. (The remainder of the current range are CF/Express Card/USB devices for laptop use.)

Service costs run about Y5,980 per month before discounts, with the initial cost for an EM ONE determined by whether you opt to remain unfettered by contractual obligations (Y95,000), or go for a one-year contract (Y71,000) or two years (Y39,800).

Voice services will be supported in their initial phases by a roaming arrangement with NTT DoCoMo to provide nationwide coverage; it’s not entirely clear at present how extensive eMobile’s own network is.

Advertisers Look To Big Web Brands In Mobile

In Gossips, News on October 22, 2007 at 12:29 pm

Moconews reports that While mobile advertising is growing strongly, apparently most advertisers are sticking with the familiar names they know from the web rather than the new start-ups targeting mobile. “Advertisers are buying up space on TWC, ESPN and other high-profile wireless Web sites, but lesser-known sites are still awash in excess inventory–even if those sites are wildly popular among young mobile users. AirG, for instance, recently surpassed the 20 million-customer mark, delivering its social networking offering in 10 languages and across more than 100 mobile operators. But despite the attractive demographics of its user base, the Vancouver, British Columbia-based startup is struggling to sell more than 10 percent of its ad space…“The last year’s been good,” said AirG spokeswoman Allison Johnson. “We’re definitely getting a lot more interest, but we’re still not selling anywhere near all of our inventory” reports RCR News. The general attitude seems to be that as the industry matures advertisers will be able to determine which mobile sites are the best for them to advertise with, and mobile marketing startups are keen to be there to close the gap. That being said, even AOL (NYSE: TWX) Mobile is reportedly having trouble, with the majority of the inventory left unsold.

As RCR notes, the potential size of the mobile advertising market varies widely depending on who you talk to. However, I’m calling out the line “AdMob said last week it delivered 673 billion–yes, with a ‘B’–ad impressions to U.S. mobile users in September alone.” I’m not exactly sure what they’re referencing, but this PDF of Admob Network Metrics puts the figure at 673 million, with an ‘m’. I’m going with the smaller figure, since 673 billion would roughly require every single person in the US to view an average of 75 mobile ads every day.

Google still high in Q3 profit

In Gadget, News on October 19, 2007 at 7:28 am

The Google train keeps on rolling. After seeing its stock rise above $600 per share not even two weeks ago, Google has exceeded forecasts by earning a profit of $1.07 billion in the third quarter of 2007, a 46% increase over the $733.3 million it earned during the same period in 2006. Sales have risen 57% to $4.23 billion.

The company is attributing the overall rise to the increasing profitability of search advertisements. Google’s stock has settled to about $639 since the announcement.

Google’s rival Yahoo, while recently reporting a 12% increase in revenue, hasn’t fared as well in terms of profit, which fell for them by 5% to $151.3 million in Q3.

Verizon Wireless in a boiling pot

In Gossips on October 17, 2007 at 11:43 am

Verizon Wireless found itself in a boiling pot of water after the company decided it would not allow a pro-choice abortion group named NARAL to use its mobile network to distribute opt-in SMS news alerts to its subscribers. Verizon Wireless said that company policy prohibits “highly controversial” and potentially “unsavory” messages from being distributed on its network, which is why they turned down the political organization.

This morning, the company reversed its decision in the face of outcry from pro-choice supporters and anti-censorship complaints from all corners of the country.

While Verizon Wireless does not monitor the contents of every SMS message sent on their network, the abortion rights group had hoped to establish a “short code” service (e.g., “text 55555″), which would need to be supported by each mobile operator to be effective on all networks. While their request was approved by other carriers, Verizon Wireless initially said “no.”

NARAL launched a response on their site, asking supporters to contact Verizon’s top executive to complain about “corporate censorship.” The site asks, “What kind of company would deny its customers the ability to use their cell phones to participate in our democracy?”

Verizon wants to share costumer call records data with third parties

In News on October 12, 2007 at 10:06 am

Verizon  Wireless has publicly expressed its intentions to start serving ads to its users, and now it has started: Jason Devitt, the founder of still-stealth Skydeck (founder of Vindigo) writes on his blog that he got a notice from VZW about CPNI (CPNI stands for Customer Proprietary Network Information…a user’s complete call records…an overview of CPNI is here), where Verizon wants to share these records with third parties.

CPNI stands for Customer Proprietary Network Information:so now  our call records, essentially. What numbers we called, how often, how long we spent on the phone, and how much it cost us. (It does not include our own names, numbers, or addresses.)

Verizon wants to share this data with third parties, and of course they need our permission: “you have a right, and we have a duty, under federal and state law, to protect the confidentiality of your CPNI.”

But that duty only goes so far: “Unless you provide us [Verizon Wireless] with notice that you wish to opt out within 30 days of receiving this letter, we will assume that you give the Verizon Companies the right to share your CPNI with the authorized companies as described above.”

Google making Phone software & Mozilla on open-source Firefox browser

In google on October 12, 2007 at 6:47 am

according to Miguel Helft people claims to have seen  the GPhone, complete with descriptions of what it looks like. Not all claims coincide. Regardless, that’s not bad for an effort about which Google has said nothing. Also to be noted is that Mike Schroepfer, the vice president for engineering of the Mozilla Foundation, announced that the group is working on a mobile version of its open-source Firefox browser.

Google’s entry into the phone business is big news. But the sources I talked to with knowledge of the project say Google is not building a phone. The company is building a mobile phone operating system, as well as what technologists call a “reference platform,” a set of specifications for how hardware makers would build a phone based on that software. Google is also beefing up its mobile applications, and it is believed to be creating software to ensure those apps run smoothly on as many phones as possible.

In a way, that looks a lot like what Microsoft does with Windows Mobile and Symbian does with its mobile operating system. Yet no one really talks about the “Microsoft Phone.” Rather, there’s the Motorola Q running Windows Mobile, the Palm Treo running Windows Mobile and so forth. So maybe speaking of the Google Phone is a bit of misnomer. Maybe we should simply be talking about the, well, we don’t yet know who will make these phones, but say if it were HTC, we would talk about the HTC phone running Google’s mobile Linux.

Then again, there is the possibility, raised by some analysts, that Google could decide to brand or co-brand phones with some manufacturers. In such a case, there really would be a Google Phone. It would also be the first time that Google would be pushing a consumer device, and as some people have noted, it could create conflicts for Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who sits on the board of iPhone maker Apple.

    Hide folders with invisible trick

In mobile market, mobile software on October 11, 2007 at 7:28 am

Accrding to Jeff Dempsey You ever have a folder on your computer that you really dont want any one to find? You can make this folder hidden but then you have to un-hide all the folders when ever you want to find it. So how can you make a folder truly invisible? Follow these simple steps and your unmentionables will stay that way.

    1. Right click where ever you want the invisible folder to be and select create a new folder.

    stepone.jpg
    2. Right Click on the folder and hit rename. Erase the name of the folder so there is nothing there.

    3. If you try to stop here windows will tell you that you need to provide a name. So to get around this… with the name field still active hold down ALT and press 0160 on the number pad (make sure Num Lock is on), release alt

    step2.jpg

You should now have a blank name with nothing but a folder next to it

    4. Now click on the nameless folder and right click. Select Properties.

    step4.jpg

    5. Go to the Customize tab.

    step5.jpg

    6. Find and press the Change Icon button. Scroll through the icons until you find one that has no image.

    step6.jpg

    4. Hit OK and you have an invisible folder!

    invisible.jpg

With the invisible folder you can hide what ever undesirables you have. Be it video games at work, pictures of your family or anything else you can think of “wink”.

The folder will show up for a brief second if you put it on your desktop. For that reason it might be smart to place it inside a folder or amongst a group of folders.

5 ways to secure your mac

In Reviews, mac on October 10, 2007 at 6:52 am

Mac users: you’re most likely not running any virus scanners or spyware killers, but you’re just as vulnerable to careless computing habits that could compromise your system as anyone else. Macworld lists five ways you can secure your Mac, including:

    • Use admin accounts for administration only
    • Don’t share user accounts
    • Turn on password prompts
    • Encrypt sensitive files (Ed: more on that)
    • Attach a security cable

While most people probably have never used that lock slot for a security cable (have you?), the rest of these are just good habits to get into regardless of operating system

Yahoo to Purchase 10 Percent or $100M of Alibaba IPO

In Money, News on October 10, 2007 at 6:14 am

According to various reports, Yahoo is going to buy either a 10 percent stake or $100 million worth of the forthcoming public offering of B2B site Alibaba.com on the Hong Kong exchange. The company already owns a significant minority stake (39 percent) of Alibaba Group, the parent of Alibaba.com. It would be buying a stake directly in the B2B site. As Loren Baker explains, Yahoo doesn’t own its foreign sites, which are typically operated as joint ventures with local control.

  • Mac Marketshare at Universities Booming?

In Money, mobile, mobile market on October 8, 2007 at 5:43 am

    Mac News

The DailyPrincetonian reports on a growing trend amongst at least some universities.

The Princeton University newspaper reports that Princeton’s Mac marketshare has been rising dramatically, with 40 percent of students and faculty currently using a Mac as their personal computer. This number is up from only 10% of Mac users on campus only 4 years ago. And this number could still be growing. This year, the University’s Student Computer Initiative reportedly sold more Macs than PC’s, with 60 percent of students choosing a Mac, up from 45 percent just last year. Students were offered a choice of Dell, IBM and Apple computers.

This follows a recent report that looked at a similar trend at many other colleges. According to a separate Pioneer Press survey, Dartmouth is up to 55% freshman with Macs (up from 30% in 2005), University of Virginia with 20% of freshman with Macs (up from 17% in 2006), and Cornell with 21% dorm network users with a Mac (up from 5% between 2000-2002).

PioneerPress attributes the uptick in sales to the popularity of the iPod, security of Mac OS X, design and ease of use.

These numbers are much higher than the general population, in which Mac marketshare numbers have been hovering around 5-6%. (All of these figures may not be directly comparable, as marketshare numbers typically represent new sales in a particular time-period rather than the installed base. Regardless, the numbers are still significantly higher than would be expected.)

Enter the Photoshopped yet appropriately-blurry, rumored next phase of the Research In Motion takeover… the BlackBerry 9xxx. Okay, adjust your eyeballs and listen up — according to the Boy Genius Report, the new device is slated to launch sometime in early 2008, and will be delivering mouth-watering goods like HSDPA-ified 3G, a 600Mhz processor, and an integrated backup / restore function which should help keep the suits from sweating themselves out of their expensive leather office chairs. Of course, this is all deeply, deeply unconfirmed at the moment, though the Boy Genius says he has a source. We suggest taking it with a grain of salt — but feel free to dream

Want to make an appointment to see the doctor!Doctor 2.0 is here

In News, Technology on October 4, 2007 at 5:42 am

    Jay Parkinson

While ZocDoc is busy creating a platform for doctors to interact with their patients, Dr. Jay Parkinson figures he already has the tools he needs to run a Web 2.0-style medical practice.

Want to make an appointment to see the doctor? Check out his Google Calendar for availability and shoot Parkinson a text message or e-mail. He’ll text you back and then make a house call with as little as an hour’s notice. He doesn’t have an office. Instead he has e-mail, instant messenger, and a cellphone. And Parkinson uses Life Record to keep his medical records online.

Parkinson is based in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood, where he is targeting young creative professionals, many of whom are freelancers. That means they don’t have full time jobs with health benefits. So he charges $500 a year for an initial checkup and up to 2 house calls. If you need more, you can pay per visit. If you need a specialist, he’ll direct you to one. Since Parkinson isn’t part of a medical network, he’s contacted thousands of NY area doctors to discover specialists with the lowest prices for a variety of procedures.

What do you think? House calls are great and all, but would you be willing to see a doctor that doesn’t even have an office?

Justin.tv opens its lifecasting platform to anyone with a webcam

In News on October 4, 2007 at 5:11 am

    Justin.tv

First there was Justin. For the past few months, you’ve been able to watch life through the eyes (or camera) of a guy named Justin who has been broadcasting his life on the internet 24 hours a day. Then there was Justine, a conveniently named blogger who stepped to wear the dorky hat. Gradually, Justin.tv has added more and more channels to its “lifecasting” platform, and today the team has announced that they are opening up the platform to pretty much anyone who doesn’t mind sharing their lives over the web.

You’ll need to be 13 or older to participate, and obviously you’ll need a webcam, computer, and internet connection. The Justin.tv front page makes flipping from channel to channel a breeze. There’s a Cover Flow-like interface that you can scroll through, or if you know the name of the channel you want to see, you can use the search bar. But honestly, there’s something kind of compelling about flipping from one lifecast to the next. It’s kind of like flipping TV channels hoping that you’ll land on something interesting, even though you know there’s nothing good on.

Microsoft has released Bungie Studios from its ownership

In Microsoft on October 4, 2007 at 4:47 am

According to an email received by the Post-Intelligencer, Microsoft has released Bungie Studios from its ownership. The deal is apparently done, but Microsoft wishes to hold the public announcement until after October 6 for the protection of quarterly financial results.

The email reads: “Apparently MS just wants Bungie to make Halo for the rest of their natural days, and Bungie doesn’t like how MS is constantly trying to “handle” everything they do; the way they market their games, the way they interact with their fans (basically the fact that they do appreciate their fans), and how stingie [sic] they are with the profits (comparable to the rest of the industry). So as of today they are their own independent entity.”

Game Informer checked with its own sources and reports that Bungie and Microsoft separated on October 1, 2007. According to the magazine, Bungie did not wish to be tied down to indefinitely making Halo games. As a result, shareholders of Bungie bought the studio name back from Microsoft for “an unstated, but significant amount of money.”

Microsoft will retain all rights to the Halo franchise, assuring that the Master Chief will never grace competitors’ systems, and will also hold “the right of first refusal on future games,” meaning that Halo 3 probably won’t be the last Xbox 360 exclusive title from Bungie Studios.

Google drive for the mobile space seems relentless. It has acquired mobile social networking and communication platform Zingku. Zingku released a statement Thursday saying that it had entered into an agreement to have Google acquire its service, but did not give details. Meanwhile Google has issued no formal statement, reports CBC News.

zingku.jpgGoogle has entered an agreement to acquire “certain assets and technology” from mobile platform operator Zingku.

    According to Zingku:

Our service is designed from the mobile phone, outward, allowing you to create and exchange things of interest ranging from invitations to “mobile flyers” with friends in a trusted manner. On the mobile phone, Zingku uses standard text messaging and picture messaging features that come with every phone. On the web, our service uses your standard web browser and instant messenger. There is nothing to install.”

We don’t have a lot of information about the company (including location; there are no details on their site) although a Google search would suggest that the company may have been funded by Flagship Ventures. If we find any more details we’ll update the post. The acquisition price was not disclosed.

Microsoft to acquire a stake in Facebook.

In Money, News on September 26, 2007 at 9:28 am

Microsoft reportedly is negotiating to acquire a minority stake in social networking service Facebook. The Wall Street Journal reports Microsoft’s proposals could value Facebook at $10 billion or higher–Microsoft is seeking to purchase a stake of up to 5 percent, at a cost between $300 million to $500 million, said sources close to the talks.

But Microsoft is not the only potential suitor: The WSJ says Google also is interested in acquiring a Facebook stake. Microsoft is said to be exploring a relationship with Facebook to help shift the balance of new-media platform power away from Google–Facebook, which counts more than 40 million users and adds more than 200,000 new subscribers each day, anticipates 2007 profits of $30 million on revenue of $150 million. Facebook reportedly is seeking to generate as much as $500 million in cash for acquisitions of its own. Sources add the company is also developing its own ad platform, enabling marketers to target users via personalized ads. Representatives for Microsoft, Facebook and Google all declined comment.

    Excel 2007 Multiplication Bug

In Gadget on September 25, 2007 at 9:55 am

tibbar66 writes with news of a serious multiplication bug in Excel 2007, which has been reported to the company. The example first that came to light is =850*77.1 — which gives a result of 100,000 instead of the correct 65,535. It seems that any formula that should evaluate to 65,535 will act strangely. One poster in the forum noted these behaviors: “Suppose the formula is in A1. =A1+1 returns 100,001, which appears to show the formula is in fact 100,000… =A1*2 returns 131,070, as if A1 had 65,535 (which it should have been). =A1*1 keeps it at 100,000. =A1-1 returns 65,534. =A1/1 is still 100,000. =A1/2 returns 32767.5.”Read more of this story

IM+ for Skype for (Symbian series)

In Mobile Softwares, News, Smartphone, software on September 25, 2007 at 8:45 am

IM+ for Skype is a mobile software that allows users to chat with Skype friends and call any PC/mobile/landline phone, regardless of the WiFi zones. Pure Skype quality with no extra voice delays! Skype Certified.

    IM+ Skype

Skype wirelessly anywhere in a cost-effective way

IM+ for Skype is the unique mobile application that enables voice and text communication with other Skype users and provides cost-effective calling to landlines and mobiles.

The application is completely mobile. No desktop with Skype is necessary. All you need is a mobile device with Internet connection and SkypeOut credits to make/receive calls. IM+ for Skype is network independent, working in GSM, 3G and CDMA and doesn?t require WiFi.

    IM+ Skype

IM+ Skype Call Skype users from any Symbian S60 v3 mobile. With IM+ for Skype you can talk with other Skype users all over the world. Enjoy high quality of voice communication – clear sound, no delays even for long-distance calls!Make cost-effective calls to any destination. IM+ for Skype is based on SkypeOut service that allows users to make and receive calls for extremely low fees.

See who is online and chat with Skype users. Text messaging is cost effective way to say something instead of sending an SMS.

One Time Fee, all updates included. One time fee for the application, no monthly subscription.
By purchasing IM+ for Skype users are entitled to all products upgrades.

Saving with IM+: Cost effective mobile telephony.

    See how you can save:

§ Example 1: Call from UK Vodafone phone to PC with Skype.

Let?s say Mary is on IM+ for Skype, lives in UK and her carrier is Vodafone. Mary wants to call her friend who has Skype on her PC. SkypeOut rate will be equal to destination rate for calling to UK Vodafone of €0.205 per minute plus the connection fee rate (€ 0.039).

§ Example 2: Call from UK Vodafone phone to landline in USA.

Let?s say Mary is on IM+ for Skype, lives in UK and her carrier is Vodafone. Mary wants to call her college friend who lives in USA, Florida to her phone number. To calculate the SkypeOut rate, just add the destination rate for calling to to UK Vodafone (€0.205) and the destination rate to call to USA (€0.017). So the rate to call from USA to UK via IM+ for Skype is €0.222 per minute plus the double connection fee rate (€0.078).

You can save even more by using ANY landline number instead of mobile!

SkypeOut tariffs to landlines and mobiles are different and in most cases calling to mobile is much more expensive than calling to landlines. You can enter any landline number (it can be the phone number of a friend you came to visit, or even a phone number of a local restaurant) in the Call Back field in IM+ and the call will be forwarded to the number you indicate.

§ Example 3: Call from UK Vodafone phone to landline in USA with Call Back to landline.

Let?s say Mary is on IM+ for Skype, lives in UK and her carrier is Vodafone. Mary wants to call her college friend who lives in USA, Florida to her phone number. To make the most economy call Mary enters the landline UK number of her Mother in the Call Back field. Now the rate will include the destination rate for calling to to UK landline (€ 0.017) and the destination rate to call to USA (€ 0.017). So the rate to call from USA to UK via IM+ is € 0.034 per minute plus the double connection fee rate ( €0.078).

    System Requirements:

    • any Symbian S60v3 mobile device connected to Internet;
    • SkypeOut credits for voice communications.

SkypeOut is your personal account where you can add Skype credit to make and receive calls in IM+ for Skype. Skype credit is necessary for any incoming or outgoing calls. You can get SkypeOut on the official Skype website.

    iPhone transforms AT&T network

In apple, iphone on September 25, 2007 at 7:44 am

The iPhone has certainly had an impact on customer’s wallets, on Apple’s Mac OS release schedule and on competitors like Nokia and Motorola. Now, it seems that the device has also had an impact on AT&T’s cellular network. AT&T says that network upgrades go on all the time, but 20,000 new radios seems like a significant change for a single new device. The upgrades are having an impact beyond the iPhone, though–customer churn is low, and customer satisfaction is high. With results like these, the iPhone could prove important to AT&T for a long time to come.

T-Mobile is offering the handset for $249.99 with a two-year contract. It comes in either ”pale gold” or “titanium.” Interesting that there have been a couple of high profile WiFi-enabled phone launches since the 700 MHz debate over open access and open devices. Here’s what the handset looks like in pale gold

    Xerox aims to challenge HP

In Gadget on September 24, 2007 at 9:11 am

Xerox have introduced five printers, including the Phaser 8860, which features new solid-ink technology, saying the system puts the cost of color pages on par with that of black-and-white.

Solid ink uses wax ink sticks rather than the cartridges of powdered toner found in laser printers. The process works like that of a high-end offset press to create richer colors, the company says, and has significantly fewer disposable parts, which leads to lower maintenance costs.

“If you compare HP color toner to what our inks will be, we will be one-fifth the price. We think it’s going to help us grow our market share and attract a lot of customers who maybe don’t consider Xerox today,” said Jim Rise, a Xerox vice president.

Experts say color documents are seen as more effective in communications, but the cost of buying new color printers, supplies and service contracts has been a barrier to adoption.

    Google introduces Gadget Ads

In Gadget, google on September 21, 2007 at 7:32 am

Google officially launched Google Gadgets as an ad unit tonight after about three months of pilot testing. Google’s AdWords platform now supports Google Gadget content in addition to existing text, image, and video offerings. The gadget ads feature an entirely new widget analytics platform for tracking gadget success and interaction, an open caching proxy hosted by Google’s geo-distributed servers, and the introduction of YouTube as a video hosting and transcoding platform free from any Google branding. I previously covered Google’s upcoming advertising widgets in early May.

Advertisers can create Google Gadget content in any size supported by AdWords images. In the example shown above Intel combined a Flash game with tabs displaying images and text with more information on the Intel Centrino Duo mobile processor. Each gadget interaction is recorded according to a set list of actions such as mouse over, tab views, entering a ZIP code, subscribing to a web feed, or initiating audio or visual playback. External links such as a visit to an external website pass through Google trackers for CPC billing.

Dubai World is chipping in for a stake in Las Vegas’

In Money, dubai on September 21, 2007 at 7:09 am

Dubai World is chipping in for a stake in Las Vegas’ MGM Grand for $5bn. Making Dubai the proud owner of 9.5% share in one of the largest hotels on the strip.

Someone told me that its impossible for a an Arab/Muslim city to invest in a gambling operation and most likely its wrong. But the story was also on CNN, so most likely its true. I am not worried about Arab’s reaction to it, but more towards American one.

Can’t wait to see Jon Stuart’s thoughts on it tomorrow night; he is in Iraq at the moment by the way.

I’ll be very honest with you, I don’t care about this whole arab investing in gambling business. I spent a whole week in Vegas last summer and I stayed in MGM. I didn’t hit the tables, instead I spent a small fortune on shows like BlueMan show, KA and others. So, there are lots of things to do in Vegas other than to gamble.

I am with this move and if they can buy 100% of MGM, I am down with it.

Also, the place is full of themed venues such as NewYork NewYork, Luxor, Paris and Aladdin (now known as Planet Hollywood).

In Exercise, ideas on September 19, 2007 at 10:01 am

    4 minute crosstrainer

Just 4 minutes use will be the equivalent of 45 minutes on a conventional treadmill. This is what US based company Range of Motion is claiming for its ROM machine. The 4-minute CrossTrainer is being claimed by the compnay to burn 465 calories by exercising 55% of the body’s muscles. The ROM involves 12 times as many muscle cells as does walking or running. Out of shape and weak people can get to very high oxygen consumption rates with the ROM because so very much more muscle cells are involved in oxygen metabolism while using the ROM. The extremely time efficient 4-minute CrossTrainer asks for a mere £7,800 ($15,000). After all, 4 minutes a day is not a bad idea

mobile handset industry future market expansion forecast to grow only 5.6% CAGR from 2007 until 2012

In Best mobiles on September 19, 2007 at 9:10 am

Acoording to informa telecom The mobile handset industry is the largest consumer electronics market in the world, with almost one billion mobile handsets sold during 2006. After a period of strong annual growth until 2006, this is now slowing with future market expansion forecast to grow only 5.6% CAGR from 2007 until 2012. The market continues to be dominated by Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG, who together account for over 80% of device shipments. Their success is largely a result of their performance on a number of criteria which include market segmentation, R&D and cost control. As market growth slows and competition increases still further, these factors will become more important. However, reducing ASPs (Average Selling Price) and convergence are obliging device vendors to review their businesses.

ASP, the mean price at which a vendor sells its handsets, is often used as an indicator of vendor performance. However, as it is possible to be extremely profitable with a low ASP, or to be less profitable at a higher ASP, this indicator should not be taken in isolation. When the ASP of different device vendors is compared, it can reveal a general indication of the market tiers where these companies are most active. Thus it is possible to see the strength of Nokia’s performance in the lower device tiers, while Sony Ericsson sells the majority of its handsets at relatively high prices.

Is your BlackBerry Losing Text Messages or Call Logs?

In blackberry on September 19, 2007 at 9:03 am

Are you having issues with your text messages vanishing without deleting them? Or maybe you notice your call log is suddenly empty? Both of these are symptoms of a full memory.

What can you do to avoid this? Clear out as much as you can from your BlackBerry.

Move pictures, ringtones, music, and videos to your microSD card if you have one. You can even set your camera to save pictures there by default.

Delete programs you do not use. I often download a free trial or try out freeware that I discover I don’t need or like. I often forget about these programs which are taking up my memory. Make sure to remove them either using Desktop Manager’s Application Loader or under Options, Advanced Options, Applications.

Keep your log clear. The BlackBerry keeps a log for trouble shooting. Just hold down the alt key and type lglg from the homescreen. Once the log comes up go into the menu and select clear. Make sure to close the log when you are done.

See what programs are open. This is also a great help on the battery. From the home screen hold the alt key and press the back button. You will get a banner of programs that are running. There will be some BlackBerry applications that are always running, such as phone, messages, and BlackBerry Messenger.

Clean out old e-mails, text messages, and call logs you don’t need. I often accidentally save an e-mail or a text. I try to check my saved messages regularly and get rid of what I don’t need, such as my flight info from a trip I took three months ago.

Check your themes. Do you have lots of themes installed on your BlackBerry? They take up memory. You may want to delete them in Options, Advanced Options, Applications.

Remove any media you are no longer using, such as old ringtones or mp3s that have worn out their welcome on your BlackBerry.

From your Desktop Manager use Application Loader to see what languages are loaded on your BlackBerry. You can remove any you don’t need. Also consider removing any other the option applications that come your BlackBerry that you may not use, such as Password Keeper or BrickBreaker. If you don’t use it, free up the space.

Try any or all of these as they fit for you. These steps helped me stop my vanishing text messages

    Google gets a brand man

    Andy Berndt

valleymag reports that Google has hired a brander-in-chief, Ogilvy & Mather’s Andy Berndt.

Berndt will work with agencies on using Google’s new ad products — which now range from text links to banners, video, and radio ads — more creatively. He’ll also, most importantly, work on Google’s own marketing efforts. Only one problem, as I see it: He’ll report to Lawee, whose job now becomes even more pointless with Berndt doing all the work. If only Google followed my Darwinian “Toogle Many Googlers” principle, which would require the axing of some Googlers — say, Lawee — to make room for new hires like Berndt.

For the millions of hard-working office monkeys who are saddled with BlackBerries whether they want them or not, we present a sneak peek at the BlackBerry 8320. You saw the 8300 earlier this month on video, but this 8320 has something its lesser brother doesn’t: Wi-Fi

We’re almost there people! Now if I can only get my hands on the svelte looking chrome and black BlackBerry 8300 model, my life’s mission will be completed. Well, at least for a few hours. Although it’s the same case with minor color changes, the BlackBerry 8320 has one thing the 8300 doesn’t. That’s WiFi. Still no GPS but, let’s hope the 8xxx (Papa Bear) will join his family soon at the BGR Headquarters. Check out some BlackBerry 8320 flicks in the gallery!

On second note: While looking over the device it seems as if it has the standard 2.5mm headset jack, and NOT the 3.5mm headset jack found on the 8300. RIM is really just trying to confuse the hell outta us aren’t they?

On Google’s content network, 10 to 15% of clicks are fraudulent

    In Google's on September 18, 2007 at 9:11 am

According to Forbes click-fraud auditors who argue that there’s a discrepancy in Google’s content network where 10 to 15% of clicks are fraudulent: They say you throw away no more than 10% of clicks, while they estimate click fraud rates at as much as 25%. This is where Google’s $13 billion in revenue comes from clicks on ads.

That’s just one particular set of numbers. The auditing firm, Fair Isaac, for example, estimated in May that on Google’s content network, 10 to 15% of clicks are fraudulent. On ads placed next to search results, they said that there was a negligible rate of click fraud, less than 1%. That implies an overall click-fraud rate of around five to 7%. The number of clicks that we proactively throw out is less than 10%. So then the question is really: How much are advertisers getting for free thanks to our detection methods?

Most auditors have realized this is very difficult to do from the point of view of a third party and have changed their business model to focus on other kinds of analytics. Click Forensics is one company that has continued to publish numbers, but I don’t hear much about them anymore. You need a lot of data to do any sort of statistical analysis, and auditors don’t have nearly as much as we do.

Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt dismissed click fraud as “immaterial.” Even after paying a $90 million settlement, Google has maintained its “everything-is-just-fine” answer to click-fraud worrywarts

Google finally rounds out their web-based office suite with the addition of a Presentations to Google Docs. Create a whole new slideshow in Presentations or upload an existing PowerPoint file to get started. Kick your web-based presentation into slideshow view mode and invite others to see it real-time as you move through slides—with chat built right into the sidebar. Make the slideshow public or invite specific collaborators to edit and/or view. Check out my test Life Hacks 101 presentation, an existing .PPT file imported into Google Docs, which I used at a talk this summer. While I wouldn’t use a browser-based slideshow to give a real-time, in-person presentation, for collaborating on a set of slides remotely, this looks ace. Of course, web-based presentation-makers aren’t new; Zoho Show and Preezo have been around for some time now.

O2 To Offer a 40% Revenue Share For IPhone

In iphone on September 18, 2007 at 5:33 am

O2 is actually going to give Apple a FORTY percent of all revenues made off the iPhone. This will be on top of any margin O2 has agreed with Apple on the retail price of the device, which will reportedly also need to be shared with Carphone Warehouse—these details will presumably be made more clear at Apple’s press conference in London tomorrow, which everyone expects to be related to the iPhone.According to a story in the Guardian, Apple has played all mobile operators off each other and has specifically sought national deals as a way of increasing its bargaining position [no mention of the FT Deutschland rumors that T-Mobile might actually be offering it in more than one country]:

“Orange and T-Mobile are understood to have signed contracts [in France and Germany respectively] and at least one had Apple employees helping to implement the device on their networks. But at the 11th hour O2 snatched the UK deal with an offer that gave such a high proportion of revenues to Apple that none of its competitors could see any way of making any return on the phone, even over three years.

Ultra Mobile PCs (UMPCs) are defined as devices which run Windows and business applications and are aimed at business users, while Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) target consumers and are more likely to run a Linux operating system. “Because many of these devices would be small and have limited battery power, [ABI vice president Stan] Schatt says, many of them would save power by being based on Linux instead of Windows. The most well-known Linux-based platform is currently being developed by Intel, which debuted its plans to enter the nascent MID market in April,” reports PC World. Schatt also suggests that ultramobile PCs haven’t really done enough to differentiate themselves from laptops, and will therefore struggle…

    AT&T taps NEC America

AT&T has picked NEC America to provide it with some legacy optical gear for its new video network. They have worked together before, so the relationship itself isn’t necessarily a surprise, but bringing in legacy gear to support a new service is. Where were the new global vendor giants on this one? Perhaps they were busy trying to integrate themselves.

NEC America is not exactly a mom-and-pop shop, but in the U.S. market, it also doesn’t seem the most likely supplier in a carrier infrastructure deal supporting a new video service, especially with a lot of other global vendor giants embedded in those networks, too. But.

Yet, there’s not much more for Alca-Lu to do at this point than forge ahead, make more cuts if necessary and try hard–really hard this time–to figure out what carriers will actually spend on network gear in the near future. Some might call the Alcatel-Lucent merger a mistake, but until some giant telco says it would rather deal with mom-and-pop shops than international conglomerates that  can meet their scalability requirements, this is a deal you won’t see undone.
